ECAC Announces 2016 Division III North Men's Soccer All-Stars

DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced its 2016 Division III North Men’s Soccer All-Star Team.

Bass Sarr from Buffalo State College captured the award for Offensive Player of the Year, while SUNY Cortland’s Connor Young was voted the Defensive Player of the Year. Forward Mattie Mrlik from Vassar College earned the Rookie of the Year honor, and SUNY Cortland’s Steve Axtell took home the award for Coach of the Year.

Sarr, a sophomore forward, led the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) in scoring with 12 goals and 26 points in just 17 games making him the Huntley Parker SUNYAC Offensive Player of the Year. The forward was on fire this season, netting five game-winning goals. Sarr, who has won back-to-back All-SUNYAC Second Team accolades, has tallied 19 goals over 33 games in his first two seasons for the Bengals.

Young earned Defensive Player of the Year after posting a stellar junior season that saw him record 10 shutouts in 16 games for the Red Dragons. Young finished the regular season with a mark of 14-1, a 0.33 goals-against-average and a save percentage of .932, earning him an All-SUNYAC First Team nod.

Mrlik posted an impressive 29 points, placing him among Liberty League leaders. His 11 goals were first in the conference and his seven assists put him third in the conference. Mrlik had eight multi-point games under his belt, and registered at least one point in 12 of 20 games this season. In addition to being named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week three times this season, Mrlik has also been named the ECAC Rookie of the Week twice, a program history first.

Axtell was named SUNYAC Coach of the Year after leading Cortland to its first SUNYAC regular-season title since 1993 and its first SUNYAC tournament title since 2008. With a 19-3 overall record, the Red Dragons set records for wins in a season and shutouts (14) in a season.
