Mallory, Lange Highlight ECAC DII Men's Basketball Major Awards and All-Star Selections
DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced its 2016-17 Division II Men’s Basketball major award recipients and All-ECAC selections.
Michael Mallory from Southern Connecticut State University was selected as the ECAC Division II Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, while Newberry College’s Marshall Lange secured top rookie honors. Patrick Beilein from Le Moyne College collected the Coach of the Year accolade to round out the major awards.
Mallory receives the ECAC Player of the Year award after a historic season for the Owls. A unanimous First-Team All-Northeast 10 selection, the senior dropped 667 points in 29 regular-season and conference-tournament games, the second-highest total in a single season in NE10 history. Mallory averaged 23 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game through those 29 contests, while shooting 41 percent from the field and 97.2 percent from the charity stripe. The guard was also a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection to conclude his senior campaign.
Lange’s award for ECAC Rookie of the Year comes on the heels of being named the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Freshman of the Year. The rookie appeared in 28 of 29 games for the Wolves this year, averaging 12.8 points per game on 45.4 percent shooting in those contests. Lange led Newberry in scoring on four occasions as a freshman, highlighted by a 26-point outburst against Mars Hill to carry the Wolves to an 83-79 triumph on Feb. 4.
Beilein’s honor comes after he led Le Moyne on a remarkable turnaround in 2016-17. After his team went just 10-17 in his first year, the second-year steward guided the Dolphins to a 22-6 overall record and helped Le Moyne secure the No. 1 seed in the East Region of the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship. In addition to team success for his Dolphins, Beilein helped Russell Sangster earn NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year to highlight a sizeable improvement from 2015-16.
