ECAC Announces Women's Gymnastics Weekly Accolades
DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced its weekly awards for women’s gymnastics for the week of competition ending March 5.
Division I
Gymnast of the Week
Caroline Morant – Brown University, Sr., Chicago, Illinois
Morant totaled 39.075 in the all-around in Brown’s tri-meet with the University of New Hampshire and Yale University. The Illinois native earned 9.8 marks in the vault, bars and floor exercise. The score stands as the top mark among ECAC competitors last week, and also represents the second-best all-around score of the senior’s career.
Specialist of the Week
Breahna Wiczkowski – Temple University, So., Lititz, Pennsylvania
Wiczkowski had a strong showing in Temple’s win over Cornell University on Saturday. After leading off the bar lineup with a 9.5, Wiczkowski shattered her own career-high beam score with a 9.925. The score not only secured her the event title, but also stands as the first ever 9.925 on beam in Temple gymnastics history. The score stands as the highest beam score among ECAC gymnasts for the 2017 season.
Rookie of the Week
Emma Firmstone – Yale University, Fr., Homesdale, Pennsylvania
Firmstone scored a 9.8 on floor, a 9.775 on beam, and a 9.625 on vault in Yale’s tri-meet with UNH and Brown. The freshman started out a vaulting line-up that scored the third-highest vault team score in school history with a career-high score on vault. Firmstone also came within .025 of setting new career-high marks on beam and the floor exercise.
Coaches Choice
Jordan Mitchell – Brown University, Sr., Indianapolis, Indiana
Mitchell turned in a strong score in the all-around, posting a 38.1 behind solid scores in the vault (9.5) and on beam (9.725). It marked the first time this season Mitchell had competed in the all-around for Brown.
Division II
Gymnast of the Week
Selena Swanger – West Chester University, Sr., Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Swanger went 3-for-3 in both of West Chester’s meets last week. The senior started her week with a season-best score of 9.7 on vault, and also scored 9.725 on floor and 9.65 on beam in the Golden Rams’ meet with UNH, Temple, the University of Maryland and the College of William & Mary. Later in the week, Swanger had qualifying marks in the vault (9.65), beam (9.575) and floor (9.675) in a quad-meet featuring multiple Division I competitors.
Specialist of the Week
Kimberly Stewart – University of Bridgeport, Sr., Eastham, Massachusetts
Stewart scored a 9.875 on vault in Bridgeport’s meet with WCU, Penn State University and the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday. The senior tied for first place with teammate Maya Reimers in the event. Stewart also registered a 9.725 in the floor exercise.
Rookie of the Week
Maya Reimers – University of Bridgeport, Fr., New York, New York
Reimers had another strong showing in the all-around for UB last weekend, totaling 38.925 to finish fifth overall in a meet featuring competitors from multiple Division I schools. The freshman finished tied for first in the vault (9.875), and also scored 9.875 in the floor exercise to finish fourth in the event.
Coaches Choice
Michaela Gilbert – Southern Connecticut State University, So., St. Petersburg, Florida
Gilbert set a new school record on beam, scoring 9.85 to lead the Owls in their win over Springfield. The sophomore also scored a 9.35 on bars in the meet.
