ECAC Announces Corvias Softball Players of the Week
DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced the Corvias Softball Players of the Week for the week ending April 23.
DIVISION II
Player of the Week
Cassidy Wootten – Mercy College, Jr., 3B
Wootten batted a team-best .571 with three home runs, nine RBIs and six runs scored as Mercy went 6-2. The junior recorded a hit in all but one of the eight games and recorded five RBIs and a home run in the Mavericks sweep of STAC last Tuesday. Wootten then went on to homer twice with three RBIs in Mercy's sweep of Felician on Thursday.
Pitcher of the Week
Sydney Ponto – Caldwell University, Sr., P
Ponto went 4-0 with a 0.23 ERA, allowing one earned run and striking out 48 batters in 30.0 innings pitched for the week. The senior threw four complete games and two shutouts in addition to tossing a perfect game with nine strikeouts in a win over Goldey-Beacom. Ponto struck out 20 batters in a nine-inning win over American International. She registered 12 strikeouts in a complete-game shutout win over Concordia and struck out seven in a win over regionally-ranked Mercy.
Rookie of the Week
Kendall Meeks – Mercy College, Fr., 1B/3B/P
Meeks batted .450 (9-for-20) with three RBIs, three runs scored and a home run. The freshman went 3-for-6 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored against STAC. Meeks then went 3-for-5 with an RBI against Felician on Thursday.
DIVISION III - METRO
Player of the Week
Emily Sabo – Kean University, Sr., 2B
Sabo led the Cougars in a 5-1 week. She went 8-for-16 (.500) with five RBIs, five runs scored, two home runs, a triple and a double, along with a stolen base. She recorded a 1.063 slugging percentage. She went a combined 4-for-6 with a home run, triple and double in a twin-bill sweep of Rutgers-Newark. She added two hits and two walks in the nightcap of a sweep of Lebanon Valley. Sabo wrapped up the week with a combined 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a home run in a split with TCNJ. The second baseman also successfully handled all 44 chances (28 putouts, 16 assists) without an error. Sabo currently leads all NJAC players in batting average (.505) and on-base percentage (.580).
Pitcher of the Week
Josie Novak – Moravian College, Jr., P
Novak helped No. 7 Moravian to a 7-1 record last week by going 4-0 in the circle with a 0.00 ERA as she allowed just eight hits and five walks while striking out 26 batters in 27 innings. Novak picked up three shutouts including her seventh one-hit shutout of the season versus The Catholic University of America on Sunday. Novak also had one putout and three assists in four chances in the field and started one double play.
Rookie of the Week
Patricia Riches – College of Staten Island, Fr., SS
Riches continues to explode at the plate this season, as she batted .467 last week with 15 RBIs and 12 runs scored with four doubles and a home run. She slugged .700 and boasted an on-base percentage of .553. She tied her own single-game record with seven RBIs in a single game against Baruch College and she posted three doubles in that game which ties a school record as well. For the season, Riches is nationally-ranked with a .546 average, slugging .845 with an on-base percentage of .603.
DIVISION III – NEW ENGLAND
Player of the Week
Timi Carone – Castleton University, Jr., OF/C
Carone had her best week of the season in a week in which Castleton went 4-2-1, batting an impressive .542 (13-for-24) with a double, three triples and a home run for a slugging percentage of .958. Carone also scored nine times and drove in nine runs, while drawing a pair of walks and stealing two bases. The junior reached base safely in all seven contests, scored a run in six of the seven games and recorded four multi-hit games. Carone opened the week with a 4-for-7 day against Keene State, clubbing her second career home run, a grand slam, as part of a 10-5 win over the Owls. She followed that up with a three-hit day in a doubleheader against Plymouth State, with two of her hits going for triples. Carone then drew a walk, drove in a run and scored a run in a win over Southern Vermont before posting one of her best outings of the season on Sunday. The junior posted a 6-for-9 line against NAC foe UMF, going 4-for-5 in game one before backing it up with a 2-for-4 nightcap. Carone scored four times against the Beavers and drove in three runs, smacking a double and a triple on the day while stealing a pair of bases.
Pitcher of the Week
Jen Jones – Husson University, Fr., P/OF/1B
Jones helped her team finish out a very impressive week, as the Eagles went 5-1 with four shutouts as the pitcher earned two wins on the mound. The freshman contributed both offensively and defensively in a 1-0 win over Southern Maine. She scattered five hits, allowed just one walk, and struck out six while also going 1-for-2 at the plate. She then earned a victory over Johnson State, as she didn’t allow a hit and struck out seven while pitching the final 3.1 innings. In Husson’s final win of the week, Jones contributed out in right field while going 1-for-2 at the plate with two scored runs and two RBIs off of a homerun.
Rookie of the Week
Mycala Moody – Framingham State University, Fr., Utility
Moody batted .533 (8-15) with a triple, two RBIs, seven runs scored, three walks and three stolen bases with a .667 slugging and .611 on-base percentage in a 5-1 week for the Rams. The rookie went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a triple and an RBI in the doubleheader sweep of Worcester State and scored a pair of runs with two stolen bases in the 8-4 win over Roger Williams University. Moody went 3-for-6 with a RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base in the doubleheader sweep of Massachusetts Maritime.
DIVISION III – NORTH
Player of the Week
Courtney Hyland – SUNY Canton, Fr., 1B
Hyland hit .560 (14-for-25) from the plate with a .645 on-base percentage, .880 slugging percentage, 10 RBIs and six runs leading the Roos to a 6-1 mark. The freshman finished with eight doubles, six walks and 22 total bases as the Roos earned a pair of sweeps against Alfred State and a sweep of Wells College with their lone losses coming to SUNY Potsdam. Hyland’s best outing came when she went 7-for-9 in a Sunday sweep at Alfred State with four doubles and drove in five runs. In the field, she recorded 46 putouts and four assists without a single error.
Pitcher of the Week
Lindsey Thayer – St. John Fisher College, Jr., P
Thayer of the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College softball team had a record-setting week as the No. 10 Cardinals went 6-0 including four wins in conference play. Thayer threw two no-hitters last week including her first-career perfect game and notched her 1,000th career strikeout on April 22. On April 21, Thayer tied an NCAA Division III record with 21 strikeouts in seven innings as the junior blanked Nazareth College. Against Keuka last Tuesday, Thayer had 18 strikeouts over seven innings and allowed just one walk. Thayer was even better in the circle against Alfred on Saturday as she combined to throw nine perfect innings including a perfect game in the nightcap with 17 more strikeouts. On the week, Thayer went 3-0 with no runs, three hits and 60 strikeouts in 23.0 innings of work.
Rookie of the Week
Madison Mitchell – St. Lawrence University, Fr., P
Mitchell went 3-0 in four starts and five appearances with a 1.60 ERA with 30.2 innings pitched last week. She had three complete-game victories against league opponents and pitched six shutout innings of relief in the one league game that she did not start, posting a 0.78 ERA in four games against Skidmore and Clarkson. In 27 innings of Liberty League play, Mitchell allowed just 16 hits while striking out 18 batters. She held Skidmore and Clarkson batters to a .165 batting average.
DIVISION III – SOUTH
Player of the Week
Shelby Noel – Saint Vincent College, Jr., 1B
Noel hit .667 (10-of-15) with two home runs, four triples, 12 RBIs and eight runs scored during a 3-1 week for the Bearcats. She totaled 24 bases while reaching base at a .688 clip and totaling a 1.600 slugging percentage. Noel’s nine triples have established a new single-season school record.
Pitcher of the Week
Jazmyn Rohrer – Westminster College, Jr., P
Rohrer went 3-0 in three appearances (two starts) last week for the Titans to improve to 15-1 this season. She yielded just one unearned run over 18.0 innings of work, which included a pair of complete-game shutouts, and struck out 15 while issuing just three walks.
Rookie of the Week
Kayla Troxil – Westminster College, Fr., P
Troxil fired a two-hit shutout in Westminster's 9-0 (five inning) victory over Waynesburg last Tuesday. She finished the week 1-0 with a 1.75 earned-run average in a pair of starts. Troxil also hit .750 (3-for-4) with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored in her two starts.
