ECAC Announces Corvias Men's Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week
DANBURY, Conn. - The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced the Corvias Men's Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 23.
DIVISION II
Track Athlete of the Week
DeShaun Pickett – West Chester University, Jr.
Pickett claimed the top spots in the 100- and 200-meter dashes last week at the Widener Invitational. The junior registered a time of 10.84 seconds in the 100 meters and a time of 21.96 seconds in the 200 meters on Sunday.
Field Athlete of the Week
Justus Norman – West Chester University, Jr.
Norman won the long jump at the Widener Invitational on Saturday. The junior leaped his way for a first-place finish at 22 feet, 11.25 inches. He also obtained second in the triple jump (46 feet, 0.75 inches). ?
Rookie of the Week
Eriq Royal – Lincoln University, Fr.
Royal earned All-CIAA honors in two events at the CIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He took home the gold medal in the javelin throw with a personal-best toss of 49.58 meters (162 feet, 8 inches). His toss was nearly three meters longer than the runner-up in the competition. Royal ended the competition running the third leg of Lincoln’s 4x400 team, helping the team to a second-place finish and his second All-CIAA honor. Royal’s 400 split was 51 seconds.
DIVISION III – METRO
Track Athlete of the Week
Anthony Salemo – Rowan University, Jr.
Salemo traveled to Baltimore to compete in the Morgan State University Legacy Meet. He placed first in a field of 17 competitors in the 400-meter hurdles with an ECAC-qualifying and a season-best time of 52.71. Salemo, who captured his fifth win of the season, currently holds the conference’s best time in the 400-meter hurdles and the fourth-best mark in the event in all of NCAA Division III this season.
Field Athlete/Rookie of the Week
Matt Grillo – Rowan University, Fr.
Grillo competed at the Morgan State University Legacy Meet. He placed first in a field of five competitors in the decathlon with a wining score of 5,864 points. The performance by Grillo currently stands as the top score by an NJAC student-athlete in the decathlon this season and the 28th highest point total in the event in all of NCAA Division III.
DIVISION III – NEW ENGLAND
Track Athlete of the Week
Grandon Smith – Castleton University, Jr.
Smith qualified for the New England Division III Championships in the 800-meter run for the first time in his outdoor-season career at the Springfield Classic. The junior crossed the line with a time of 1:56.99 to set a new program record and place third overall out of 33 runners. Smith was also the third runner in a quartet that finished the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:39.66.
Field Athlete of the Week
Cameron Stalters – Fitchburg State University, So.
Stalters took top honors in the javelin with an Open New England-qualifying toss of 67.23 meters (220 feet, 6.85 inches) for the Falcons at the Elmer Swanson Outdoor Classic Invitational. He is currently ranked second in Division III in the event.
Rookie of the Week
Eric Hathaway – Husson University, Fr.
Hathaway continued his banner year for the Eagles, setting yet another school record in the shotput. The rookie tossed the shot 13.64 meters, which earned him a third-place finish at the State of Maine Championship and ranks him 16th in the region.
DIVISION III - NORTH
Track Athlete of the Week
Nicodemus Gambill – Utica College, Sr.
Gambill won the 100-meter and 200-meter dash and was part of the winning 4x100-meter relay team to be named the Track Athlete of the Meet at the Empire 8 Outdoor Championship. He set new facility and meet records in the 100 meter (10.57) and the 200 meter (21.68), while the 4x100-meter relay time of 42.08 also set a facility and meet record.
Field Athlete of the Week
Mitch Couch – SUNY Cortland, Sr.
Couch broke his own school record in the hammer throw with a winning distance of 57.98 meters (190 feet, 3 inches) at the Cortland Classic. His performance currently ranks second nationally in Division III. In all, Couch registered three ECAC-qualifying performances at the meet. In addition to his hammer throw, he finished second in both the discus (47.35 meters; 155 feet, 4 inches) and the shot put (15.02 meters; 49 feet, 3.5 inches) and presently ranks 30th nationally in the discus.
Rookie of the Week
Sean Foley – Alfred University, Fr.
Foley earned All-Empire 8 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field First Team as he won the pole vault on Saturday during the Empire 8 Outdoor Championships at Nazareth College. He hit a personal-best height of 4.30 meters to claim the win and, qualify him for the ECAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
DIVISION III - SOUTH
Track Athlete of the Week
Ernie Pitone – Widener University, Sr.
Pitone ran the fastest 5,000-meter time in NCAA Division III this season at Division I Princeton’s Larry Ellis Invitational last Friday. Pitone navigated the track in a time of 14:08.18, which is more than seven seconds faster than the next best time in the country this spring. In addition, Pitone smashed the school record time of 14:13.17, set in 2006.
Field Athlete of the Week
Jacob Schofel – Carnegie Mellon University, Jr.
Schofel recorded four career-best marks for the Tartans as the team won the University Athletic Association Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship for the fourth time in school history. He won the hammer throw for the second consecutive year when he tossed the element 54.38 meters. He placed second in the shot put with a mark of 14.47 meters, third in the discus throw with a mark of 45.64 meters and eighth in the javelin with a mark of 48.71 meters.
Rookie of the Week
Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed – Bethany College, Fr.
Sallah-Mohammed won the long jump at last Wednesday’s PAC South Quad with a mark of 22 feet, one inch (6.73 meters). The jump is an outdoor season-best for the freshman and is currently the top mark in the PAC. He was also the runner-up in the triple jump (40 feet; 11 inches, 12.47 meters) and finished fourth in the high jump (5 feet; 10.75 inches, 1.80 meters).
