Albany Tandem, Towson's Mayes Collect Major Honors to Lead DI Men's Lacrosse Awards, All-ECAC Selections
DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced its 2017 Division I Men’s Lacrosse Awards and All-ECAC selections.
Student-athletes from the University at Albany captured two of four major awards, as junior Connor Fields took home the ECAC Offensive Player of the Year award and teammate TD Ierlan was voted ECAC Rookie of the Year. Tyler Mayes of Towson University received the award for ECAC Defensive Player of the Year, while Monmouth University Head Coach Brian Fisher completed the annual awards with the ECAC Coach of the Year honor.
Fields was one of the nation’s top offensive performers in 2017, leading the nation in points per game (6.75) with 108 in 16 games during the regular season and America East Conference Tournament. The junior rifled home 51 goals and set up 57 more, helping the Great Danes secure the America East regular-season and tournament crowns. In addition to his ECAC accolades, Fields is also a finalist for the 2017 Tewaaraton Award presented by Under Armour, which is given annually to the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States.
Mayes was a crucial cog in a Towson defense that led the Colonial Athletic Association in team goals-against average (7.44). The senior scooped up 37 ground balls and caused 37 turnovers in 15 games played during the regular season and CAA tournament, helping the Tigers capture the 2017 CAA Championship in the process.
Ierlan established himself as one of the leading faceoff men in the country as a freshman. In 16 games during the regular season and America East tournament, the rookie posted a 72.2 winning percentage on draws to rank second nationally. He also placed among the national leaders in groundballs per game, scooping up 183 during the regular season and conference tournament to average 11.4 per contest.
Fisher and his Monmouth side reached new heights in 2017. The Hawks posted a 14-3 overall record this year, which included perfect 6-0 marks at home and in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) competition. In his fourth year at the helm, Monmouth captured its first-ever conference regular-season title and also won the MAAC conference championship. Additionally, nine Hawks earned All-MAAC distinction under Fisher’s guidance, which included a league-best five First Team All-MAAC selections.
