Maritime Trio, Drew's Broyles Collect Major Awards to Highlight ECAC DIII Metro Baseball All-ECAC Honors

DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced its 2017 Division III Metro Baseball Awards and All-ECAC selections.
 
Maritime College took home three of the region’s four major honors to headline the awards and selections. Senior Brian McLaughlin was tabbed as the ECAC Player of the Year, while Travis Bruinsma received the ECAC Rookie of the Year award and Maritime Head Coach Charlie Barbieri was voted the Coach of the Year. Drew University senior Tommy Broyles completed the major awards with the Pitcher of the Year honor.

McLaughlin earns ECAC Player of the Year after leading the Privateers to a Skyline Conference Championship in 2017. The first baseman batted .455 in 34 games during the regular season and Skyline tournament, driving in a league-best 51 runs on 60 hits while scoring 41 runs of his own. Highlighted by nine home runs, the senior totaled 24 extra-base hits during that span and ranked in the top-10 nationally in slugging percentage (.780). Supplementing his ECAC recognition, McLaughlin was recently named to the D3baseball.com All-New York Region First Team.

Broyles collects Pitcher of the Year after receiving the same award in the Landmark Conference on the heels of an impressive senior campaign. The right-hander went 6-1 with a 1.60 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 17 appearances, totaling five saves in 45 innings pitched. The senior also made two starts and dazzled in both, going the distance in wins over Juniata College and Moravian College in consecutive appearances. Broyles was recently named to the D3baseball.com All-Mid-Atlantic First Team in addition to his ECAC honors.

Bruinsma proved to be the anchor of the Privateers’ rotation, as he led Maritime during the regular season and conference tournament in ERA (3.70) and wins (8), while also ranking first on the team with four complete games and 41 strikeouts. A four-time Skyline Rookie of the Week selection, the freshman tied for the conference lead in wins and was the only league newcomer to earn multiple weekly rookie honors.

Barbieri and his Maritime squad set a new school record with 26 wins during the regular season, a total which includes a single-season record 15 conference wins. With Barbieri at the helm, the Privateers captured the 2017 Skyline Championship and qualified for the first NCAA tournament in program history. Additionally, six Maritime players earned All-Skyline distinction at the end of the season.
