Seawolves, Gaels put finishing touches on team S&D titles
EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The 2025 ECAC Swimming and Diving Winter Championships wrapped up on Sunday, with the Iona men and the women of Stony Brook collecting the team titles. Both teams have been in first since Day One on Friday but expanded their respective leads as the weekend carried on.
On the women’s side, Stony Brook finished with a team total of 1752 points, with Iona and Siena rounding out the top three. For the men, the Gaels picked up 1791.5 points, followed by NJIT and Bridgeport.
The final day of competition got underway with the women’s 1650 free, where Stony Brook sophomore Francesca Baber (17:27.36) held off Iona’s Anabel Huffstutler (17:28.64) in an exciting finish. Finn Drysdale, a sophomore from Long Island, shattered the previous meet record for the men’s event, as his time of 15:24.37 was more than six full seconds faster.
Iona sophomore Raegan O’Brien emerged victorious in the women’s 200 back, doing so with a mark of 2:01.57. Drew Cellar (1:46.10) of NJIT continued his stellar freshman campaign in the men’s 200 back, leading a crowded field to earn the first conference crown of his collegiate career.
The women’s 100 free followed, with Mount Saint Mary’s teammates Christine Lazari (51.21) and Carmen Del Aguila Martin (51.59) turning in a 1-2 finish, just ahead of Felician’s Amelia Mayers (51.60). Mario Poulsen (44.19) of Long Island earned the individual win on the men’s side, doing so as one of four swimmers under the 45.00 mark.
The women’s 200 breast produced one of the tightest finishes of the weekend, with Iona freshman Sydney Cronin (2:20.60) holding off Stony Brook’s Pelagia Chazov (2:20.87) and teammate Brennyn Veit (2:20.97) to pick up first place. NJIT sophomore Borys Endle (1:56.97) and Iona’s Max Buchen (1:58.51) both broke the previous meet record, set back in 2021.
Lara Wielkiewicz (2:06.17) of Long Island just edged Stony Brook’s Carson Kien (2:06.58) to earn the women’s 200 fly crown. Malik Biad, a sophomore from Felician, finished atop the podium in the men’s race, doing so behind a finals time of 1:49.38.
Madison Murphy, Theodora Kanellopoulou, Lazari and Del Aguila Martin gave Mount Saint Mary’s a win in the women’s 400 free relay with a time of 3:26.18. Long Island’s men closed out the weekend with a win in the men’s 400 free relay, as Poulsen, Drysdale, Emilio Garcia and Leandre Renault teamed up for a championship time of 2:59.31.
Baber was named the Women’s Swimmer of the Meet, with Buchen taking home the award on the men’s side. Iona’s Nick Cavataro was selected as the Men’s Swimming Coach of the Meet, with Stony Brook head coach Mark Anderson collecting the honors for the women.
