Semifinal Field Set for ECAC Men’s Indoor Tennis Championships

PHILADELPHIA –  The Eastern College Athletic Conference hosted the first round of the Men’s Indoor Tennis Championship on Friday, with four teams advancing to Saturday’s semifinal contests. The tournament is being hosted by the University of Pennsylvania at Hecht Tennis Center and will continue throughout the weekend.
 
Top-seeded Harvard jumped out to an early lead after winning the second and third doubles flights, and senior Daniel Milavsky opened singles action with a 6-2, 6-3 win on Court 1 to make it a 2-0 Crimson edge. Rohan Murali pushed the lead to 3-0 after a victory on Court 4, but Brown’s Oliver Worth got the Bears on the board after taking the third flight. Marc Ktiri closed out the match for Harvard, clinching on Court 6 behind a 6-4, 6-3 win over Alexander Bravo.
 
Penn took the doubles point in the next match against Yale, and senior Tal Goodman began singles play with a victory in the third flight. The Crimson answered with three straight points, and after Penn’s Sanjeev Chundu pulled Penn even at 3-3, Shaurya Bharadwaj came away with the clinching point on Court 4 to move the Quakers into Saturday’s semis.
 
The third match of the day saw #3 Princeton earn the first point of the match with wins in the second and third doubles flights, and the Tigers didn’t look back the rest of the way. Aleksandar Mitrci, Paul Inchauspe and Ellis Short earned victories on the sixth, second and fourth courts respectively, keeping Princeton in the winner’s bracket.
 
Cornell closed out the first day with another sweep, beginning with wins on Courts 1 and 3 to claim the doubles point. Adit Sinha and Radu Papoe gave the Big Red a 3-0 edge on the top two courts, and Eric Verdes earned the clinch with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the fourth flight.
 
Brown and Yale will kick of the consolation bracket on Saturday at 9:00 a.m., with Dartmouth and Delaware set to follow at noon. Harvard and Penn will meet at 3:00 p.m. for a spot in the finals, with Princeton and Cornell meeting in the other semifinal beginning at 6:00 p.m. looking to advance to Sunday’s championship match.
