Harvard dethrones Princeton to snag Indoor Men’s Tennis Championship
PHILADELPHIA – The Eastern College Athletic Conference crowned a new men’s indoor tennis champion on Sunday afternoon, with Harvard knocking off defending champion Princeton to take home the trophy. The Crimson have now won six of their last seven matches after outscoring opponents by a combined score of 12-3 this weekend.
The Princeton tandem of Filippos Astreinidis and Paul Inchauspe picked up the first point of the championship match, defeating Masato Perera and Peter Benjamin Privara by a tally of 6-4 in the top doubles flight. Harvard’s David Lins and Daniel Milavsky followed with a 6-3 win on Court 2, but Landon Ardila and Aleksandar Mitric teamed up to clinch the doubles point for the Tigers behind a 6-3 victory on Court 3.
Harvard answered in a big way, as Melchior Delloye held on for a 7-5, 6-0 victory on Court 4 to get the Crimson on the board, and Perera followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win in #6 singles to make it 2-1 in favor of Harvard. Milavsky outdueled Top Nidunjianzan 6-4, 7-6 in the top singles flight to put Harvard on the brink of a clinch, but Paul Inchauspe kept Princeton’s repeat hopes alive with a 7-6, 6-4 victory on Court 2.
Rohan Murali came up clutch for Harvard in the fifth flight, defeating Wen 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 to earn the clinch and the championship crown.
Earlier in the day, Yale and Dartmouth met in the fifth-place match, while Brown defeated Delaware 4-2 in the seventh-place match. Cornell finished in third place after defeating Penn 4-1.
