Semifinal Field Set for ECAC Women’s Indoor Tennis Championships
PHILADELPHIA – The Eastern College Athletic Conference hosted the first round of the Women’s Indoor Tennis Championship on Friday, with four teams advancing to Saturday’s semifinal contests. The tournament is being hosted by the University of Pennsylvania at Hecht Tennis Center and will continue throughout the weekend.
The Princeton duo of Bella Chhiv and Alice Ferlito came away with a 6-1 victory in the second doubles flight, while Eva Elbaz and Maren Urata clinched the first point of the day with a 6-2 win on Court 1. Cornell got the point back in #2 singles, with sophomore Victoria Zhao defeating Chhiv 6-1, 6-1.
Princeton’s Yichen Zhao got the Tigers back in front with a 6-3, 6-1 win on Court 3, and Ferlito followed with a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the top singles flight to push the lead to 3-1. Tsehay Driscoll closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win on Court 6, advancing the Tigers to the winner’s bracket.
Gavriella Smith and Sasha Motlagh got things started for Penn in the second match of the day, coming away with a quick 6-1 win on Court 3. Maya Urata and Lara Stojanovski gave the Quakers the early lead after a 6-4 victory in the second doubles flight, picking up the win over Mirabelle Brettkelly and Shyla Aggarwal.
Penn extended its lead to 2-0 after Eileen Wang’s 6-0, 6-0 win on Court 2, and Stojanovski put the Quakers on the brink of advancing after taking the third singles flight 6-3, 6-1. Julia Werdiger got Yale on the board with a 6-1, 6-3 win on Court 4, and Erin Ha followed with another Bulldog victory on Court 5, doing so with a 6-3, 6-3 win.
Yale sophomore Orly Ogilvy made things interesting with a thrilling 7-5, 6-4 victory in the top singles flight, turning all focus to a showdown on Court 6. Urata took the first set 6-4, but Angela Huang stormed back with a 6-4 win before clinching the deciding point with a 6-1 win.
Columbia’s Malak El Allami and Amber Yin teamed up for a 6-1 victory in the second doubles flight against Brown, while Sophia Strugnell and Gayathri Krishnan clinched the doubles point on Court 1 with a 6-3 win. Singles action saw the Lions pick up a first-round sweep, as Krishnan (6-1, 6-2), Emily Baek (6-2, 6-2) and El Allami (6-2, 6-3) each earned victories.
Harvard came away with a 4-0 sweep of Dartmouth in the day’s final match, earning the first point after taking the second and third doubles. Maxi Duncan pushed the lead to 2-0 with a win on Court 4, Stephanie Yakoff followed with a victory of her own on Court 3, and Holly Fischer took the top flight to close out the first day of competition.
Cornell and Penn will kick of the consolation bracket on Saturday at 8:00 a.m., with Brown and Dartmouth set to follow at 11:00. Princeton and Yale will meet at 2:00 p.m. for a spot in the finals, with Columbia and Harvard meeting in the other semifinal beginning at 5:00 p.m. looking to advance to Sunday’s championship match.
