Pentathlon, heptathlon kick off ECAC/IC4A Indoor Championships

BOSTON – The ECAC/IC4A Indoor Track and Field Championships got underway on Friday, with the pentathlon and heptathlon taking center stage. The event is being hosted at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center and will run through Sunday, when team champions will be crowned.
 
Alexandrio Grasso of UMass Lowell took first in the shot put (10.48m/34’ 4¾”) and 800 (2:22.94) before closing out the day as the individual champion in the pentathlon behind 3680 points. Binghamton’s Penelope Paldino grabbed the win in the long jump (5.71m/18’ 8¾”) and the 60 hurdles with a new meet record (8.50), while teammate Logan Wheeler picked up a win in the high jump (1.54m/5’ ½”).
 
On the men’s side, four of the seven events in the heptathlon concluded, with Coppin State’s Andrew Betton and Vermont’s Jackson King splitting first-place finishes. Betton collected first in the long jump (6.37m/20’ 10¾”) and the high jump (1.96m/6’ 5”), while King claimed both the 60 (7.17) and shot put (11.08m/36’ 4¼”). Betton has emerged the leader with a score of 2667, with the 60 hurdles, pole vault and 1K all on the schedule for Saturday.
