Day full of sweeps puts top two seeds in Men's Indoor Final
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference hosted the first round of the Men’s Indoor Tennis Championship on Saturday, with #1 Columbia and #2 Princeton punching their tickets to Sunday’s championship final. The tournament is being hosted by Princeton University at Lenz Tennis Center and will wrap up on Sunday afternoon.
Yale defeated Brown 4-0 in the first consolation semifinal of the day, with Harvard knocking off Dartmouth by the same score in the following match.
Columbia kicked off the championship side of the bracket with the doubles point, followed by Sachin Palta and Nicolas Kotzen both picking up singles wins, putting the Lions on the brink of a clinch. Senior Michael Zheng then defeated Rodrigo Fernandes in the top flight by a tally of 6-3, 6-3, moving Columbia into Sunday’s final.
Host Princeton began Saturday’s final match with wins on the top two doubles courts to get the early point, and Paul Inchaupse made it 2-0 with a victory in the top singles flight. Fnu Nidunjianzan then defeated Luka Butera 6-4, 6-2 on Court 2, and Aleksandar Mitric finished off the day with a 6-4, 6-4 win to advance the Tigers.
Yale and Harvard will now play for fifth place on Sunday, while Brown and Dartmouth will battle for seventh. Both matches are set to begin at 9:00 a.m. EST.
Cornell and Penn will meet in the third-place match at noon, while Columbia and Princeton will face off in the championship final at 3:00 p.m.
