Boston women, Rhode Island men in front after Day One of Indoor T&F Championships

BOSTON – Day One of the ECAC/IC4A Indoor Track and Field Championships came to a close on Saturday, with the BU women and Rhode Island men sitting in first place. The meet is being hosted on the campus of Boston University and will wrap up on Sunday afternoon.
 
Rosa Volpintesta of Brown took home the pentathlon crown with a total score of 3675, highlighted by a first-place finish in the high jump behind a distance of 1.66m (5’ 5/¼”). Fordham’s Leia Ruvo (3588) and Yale’s Layni Kaase (3376) rounded out the top three, with both turning in personal bests in the 800.
 
After four completed events in the heptathlon (60m, long jump, shot put, high jump), Rhode Island teammates Miles Lipka (2855) and Damian Scouloukas (2795) sit in first and third respectively, separated by Brown’s Gabriel Thai (2806). The 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1K race will wrap up the heptathlon on Sunday, with events slated to start at 10:00 a.m.
 
In the field events, Lauryn Piccirelli of Sacred Heart turned in a new PR mark of 1.77m (5’ 9 ¾”) to win the women’s high jump, followed by season bests from Fordham’s Zoe Arakelian (1.68m/5’ 6”) and Brown’s Adanna Obuba (1.63m/5’ 4 ¼”). Rhode Island dominated the event on the men’s side, snagging five of the top individuals, including an event win from senior Matthew Santy, whose mark of 2.16m (7’ 1”) lands him at 20th in the nation.
 
Santy’s big day continued in the men’s long jump, where he came away with his second crown of the meet after a personal-best attempt of 7.56m (24’ 9 ¾”) in another strong event from the Rhode Island men. BU’s Peace Omonzane (5.99m/19’ 8”) collected first in the women’s long jump, followed by NJIT teammates Zaidah Lightener and Maria Owens.
 
Terrier seniors Ellie Roan (20.42m/67’) and Uchenna Uba (17.69m/58’ ½”) took the top two spots in the women’s weight throw, with Maine’s Cheyenne Figueroa (17.21m/56’ 5 ¾”) placing third. Keith Daigneau gave Brown an event win on the men’s side, doing so with a mark of 19.75m (64’ 9 ¾”).
 
Jenna Engels of Sacred Heart (3.86m/12’ 8”) picked up the women’s pole vault crown on her final attempt, while JMU’s Madelyn Moles and Holy Cross teammates Bridget Sachs and Shannon Briseno tied for second at 3.76m (12’ 4”). Mount St. Mary’s sophomore Ethan Demeter (4.90m/16’ ¾”) picked up the men’s crown as the only competitor in the field to clear 16 feet.
 
The women’s 400 began the track portion of the day, with Ashley Johnson (55.26) of UMass Amherst grabbing the individual crown in what turned out to be a loaded field. Godot Gaskins helped the Minutemen sweep the event behind a time of 47.33, with each of the next nine competitors turning in season-best performances.
 
St. Joseph’s senior Tess Crossan (2:08.02) narrowly edged out BU teammates Olivia Dodds (2:08.28) and Samantha Lascelles (2:09.47) in the women’s 800, with all three turning in their best race of the year. Another photo finish was in store on the men’s side, where Maine’s Kaleb Colson (1:51.04) held off BU’s Karsen Vesty (1:51.62) and Iona’s Aiden Coles (1:51.95).
 
Vermont saw its’ first win of the weekend after senior Alex Beal won the women’s 3K, doing so with a PR time of 9:33.04. Collin Catherwood (8:06.65) followed with an individual win in the men’s race, giving UMass Amherst their third win of the day. The 5K closed out Day One, as Maine’s Ruby Krasnow (16:40.69) dominated the women’s side, followed by Tucker Bowerfind (14:24.25) of BU winning the men’s event.
