Yale takes down Penn to claim ECAC Women’s Indoor Tennis title
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference Women’s Indoor Tennis Championship came to an end on Sunday, with Yale defeating Penn 4-0 in the final to collect the conference crown. Yale entered the weekend seeded fifth but knocked off #4 Princeton in Friday’s first round and #8 Brown in the Semifinals on Saturday to punch a ticket to the title match.
The Bulldogs claimed the doubles point on Sunday with wins on Courts 1 and 3 before carrying the momentum over to singles action. Sophomore Angela Huang defeated Penn’s Varsha Vedula 6-1, 6-1 to give Yale a 2-0 advantage, and Julia Werdiger followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory on Court 3 to put the Bulldogs on the brink of a league championship.
Junior Orly Ogilvy came away with the clinching point after defeating Esha Velaga 6-2, 6-3 in the top singles flight, sending the Bulldogs into a frenzy. Yale went unbeaten in doubles competition for the weekend and dropped just one singles match, going a combined 15-1 over the last three days.
The Bulldogs now stand at 7-1 on the young season, with the loss coming in the season opener at the hands of Stanford, who was ranked ninth nationally.
