Top Seeded SUNY Brockport Wins 2008 ECAC Division III Upstate Womens Soccer Championship

Junior Jessica VanAllen (Chatham, NY/Chatham) redirected a
direct kick into the back of the RIT goal midway through the second
half to lead The College at Brockport Women's Soccer team to a 1-0
victory over RIT in the championship game of the Eastern College
Athletic Conference (ECAC) Upstate New York Tournament Sunday at
RIT. VanAllen was named the ECAC Upstate NY Tournament Most
Outstanding Player after scoring the game-winning goals in each of
the two games over the weekend as she scored twice in a 4-0 victory
over SUNY Potsdam in the semifinal victory for the Golden
Eagles.
Brockport (12-5-3) played an even first half with the Tigers
(9-8-3) as each team managed six shots and most of the action took
place in the middle of the field.
After the halftime intermission, Brockport took control of the game
dominating the midfield and creating scoring chances from the start
of the half. VanAllen had three shots in the first 10 minutes of
the half and junior Rachel Murphy (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford
Sutherland) added two quality scoring chances including one shot
from 25 yards out that slipped just wide of the RIT net.
With 18 minutes elapsed in the second half, VanAllen drew a foul
along the endline and Brockport was awarded a direct kick from 10
yards from the corner flag. Murphy sent a solid ball into the box
and VanAllen was able to redirect the ball with her torso into the
back of the net to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Eight minutes later, the weather worsened and snow began to fall
but Brockport was able to keep RIT out of the offensive zone for a
majority of the remainder of the game and claimed the ECAC title
avenging a loss in the 2007 championship game played at
Brockport.
After the shots were even at 6-6 in the first half, Brockport
dominated with a 12-2 advantage in the second 45-minutes. Liz
Durfee (Williamson, NY/Williamson) made two saves for the shutout
victory - the 20th of her career.
