ECAC Baseball Players of the Week (for the period ending 4/29/12)
Division I
Hitter of the Week
Travis Jankowski – Stony Brook University
Junior, Centerfielder, Lancaster, Pa.
Jankowski batted .650 (13-for-20) last week, driving in six runs and scoring 10 for the Seawolves. He accumulated a 1.200 slugging percentage, recording five extra base hits, including two home runs. The junior also showcased his speed, going six-for-six in stolen base attempts.
Pitcher of the Week
Kevin Ferguson – Northeastern University
Junior, Pitcher, Suffern, N.Y.
Ferguson sparkled in his lone start of the week, pitching a one-hit shutout in a 2-0 victory over Towson. The junior faced the minimum of 27 batters as the only hit in the second inning was picked off. Overall, Ferguson struck out nine and did not allow a walk.
Division II
Hitter of the Week
Joe Wendle – West Chester University
Senior, Second baseman, Avon Grove, Pa.
Wendle batted .444 (4-for-9), scoring eight runs and driving in six more last week. The senior highlighted his week by tying a school record with three home runs in a 9-8 victory over Bloomsburg. The senior also registered a 1.444 slugging percentage to go with a stolen base on the week.
Pitcher of the Week
Nick Vautrin – University of Bridgeport
Senior, Pitcher, Hadley, Mass.
Vautrin pitched a complete game shutout in a 2-0 victory over Queens last week. He struck out four and walked only one batter in the contest, allowing a meager three singles in his fourth complete game of the year.
Division III – New England Region
Hitter of the Week
Sean Riley – Bridgewater State University
Junior, Second Baseman, Fairhaven, Mass.
Riley hit .471 (8-for-17) with six runs batted in and seven runs scored in a 4-1 week for the Bears. He also surpassed the Bears’ single-season record for total bases (115) passing the previous record of 111 set in 2003. Riley leads the MASCAC in doubles, triples, home runs, runs scored, total bases and slugging percentage, and is tied for first in hits and tied for second in runs batted in.
Pitcher of the Week
Kyle Szatrowski – University of Massachusetts
Boston
Freshman, Pitcher, Agawam, Mass.
Szatrowski pitched the first no-hitter in UMass Boston history in just his third career start during a 5-0 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology. The freshman struck out seven and walked four in his first collegiate victory, while not allowing a runner to reach second base.
Division III – Metro
Hitter of the Week
Nick Turano – Rowan University
Senior, Catcher, Manalapan, N.J.
Turano hit .444 (8-for-18) with five doubles, one stolen base, eight RBI, and three runs scored in a 4-0 week for Rowan. The senior showed consistency as he went 4-for-9 in both series sweeps against Rutgers-Camden and Rutgers-Newark. He collected two hits in each game, improving his season slugging percentage to .599.
Pitcher of the Week
Chris Cirlincione – Kean University
Senior, Pitcher, Monroe, N.J.
Cirlincione pitched a 2-0 complete game shutout at No. 24 Ramapo College last week. The senior gave up just four hits and one walk while striking out eight. It was his fifth victory and second complete game shutout of the season.
Division III – Upstate
Hitter of the Week
Sean Osterman – St. John Fisher College
Junior, Outfielder, Pittsford, N.Y.
Osterman batted .474 (9-for-19) with 11 RBI and nine runs scored in a 5-0 week for St. John Fisher. The highlight of his week was a grand slam in the bottom of the tenth inning that gave the Cardinals an 8-5 walk-off victory over Utica. Osterman also collected five stolen bases, two doubles, a triple and two home runs to round out the week.
Pitcher of the Week
John MacGregor – Vassar College
Senior, Pitcher, Montclair, N.J.
MacGregor pitched a two-hit, complete game shutout to earn a 2-0 victory over Clarkson. He carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning while striking out four and walking two to earn his third win of the season.
Division III – South
Hitter of the Week
Derrek Etsell – Neumann University
Senior, Outfielder, Philadelphia, Pa.
Etsell batted .474 (9-for-19) with five runs scored and 14 RBI in six Neumann victories last week. The senior hit four doubles and a home run for a .895 slugging percentage and walked three times for an on-base percentage of .600. Etsell currently leads the Colonial States Athletic Conference in home runs with seven on the season.
Pitcher of the Week
Joe Sforza – Juniata College
Sophomore, Pitcher, Pittstown, N.J.
Sforza hurled a complete game, two-hitter to lead the Eagles to a 5-1 victory over Susquehanna. He struck out six batters and did not give up an earned run in the contest. Sforza carried a no-hitter into the seventh before allowing his first hit.
