ECAC Baseball Weekly Awards - April 24, 2012
CENTERVILLE, Mass.--The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced its Division I-II-III (regional) baseball weekly awards for the April 16-22 period, which ended Sunday:
Division I
Hitter of the Week
Jake Berry – Marist College
Sophomore, Outfielder, South Hamilton,
Mass.
Berry played a major part for a Marist squad that accrued a 4-1 record last week, batting .588 with an on-base percentage of .600. In a 4-3 win against Rider on Saturday, the sophomore had a triple, a walk and scored the winning run on a play at the plate. All told, Berry accounted for 10 runs, including three batted in, he was walked twice and had two triples during the week.
Pitcher of the Week
Kyle Hansen – St. John’s University
Junior, Pitcher, Glen Cove, N.Y.
Hansen struck out a career-high 16 batters while throwing a complete-game shutout in a 9-0 win over Cincinnati last Sunday. The win vaulted the Red Storm into first place in the BIG EAST standings. The junior did not walk a batter and worked five 1-2-3 innings.
Division II
Hitter of the Week
Matt Baer – West Chester University
Senior, Outfield, Shade Gap,
Pa.
Baer hit .533 with three runs, two doubles and three home runs while collecting eight runs batted in during a 3-2 week for the Golden Rams. The senior slugged 1.267 and recorded a .588 on-base percentage.
Division III New England
Hitter of the Week
Matt Collins – Tufts University
Senior, First Baseman, Hopkinton,
Mass.
Collins batted .630 and recorded multiple hits in each of the Jumbos’ seven wins last week. The senior scored 12 runs and drove in 12 as well, recording a .613 on-base and .963 slugging percentage.
Pitcher of the Week
Kenny Pennini – Bridgewater State University
Junior, Pitcher, Millis, Mass.
Pennini recorded the sixth no-hitter in Bridgewater State program history, striking out a career-high 12 batters in a 5-0 victory over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. The junior allowed only one runner to reach second base en route to the first Bears’ no-hitter since a combined performance from Scott Favreau and Jordan Richards in a 12-0 win over Daniel Webster in 2005.
Division III Upstate
Hitter of the Week
David Kinney – Clarkson University
Senior, Infielder/Pitcher, Mexico, N.Y.
Kinney batted .588 with four doubles, three runs scored and seven RBI, slugging .824 during the week. The senior also proved to be a dual threat, commanding the mound in a complete-game against RIT while allowing no earned runs in a 9-1 win.
Pitcher of the Week
Zack Rudman – Skidmore College
Senior, Pitcher, Pittsford, N.Y.
Rudman tossed a complete-game, five-hit shutout win against Liberty League-leading St. Lawrence, 1-0, on Friday. The senior struck out seven hitters and did not issue a walk en route to the win, helping vault the Thoroughbreds past the Saints into first place in the league standings with a 14-6 conference record.
Division III Metro
Hitter of the Week
Anthony Orsano – SUNY College at Old Westbury
Senior, Catcher, Williston Park, N.Y.
Orsano helped the Panthers clinch the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Skyline Conference tournament, batting .583 with five runs, four home runs and 12 RBI with a 1.583 slugging percentage. In a double-header sweep over Maritime, the senior tallied multiple home runs in both games, including three hits and six RBI in the opener.
Pitcher of the Week
Steven Melchiorre – Rowan University
Junior, Pitcher, Atco, N.J.
Melchiorre led the No. 22-ranked Profs to a win over No. 8-ranked Kean, pitching a nine-inning, four-hit shutout while striking out a career-high 11 batters. The junior, who ranks fourth in the New Jersey Athletic Conference in strikeouts with 42, surrendered no walks for the win.
Division III South
Hitter of the Week
Ethan Moser – DeSales University
Senior, Outfield, Barto, Pa.
Moser led the Bulldogs in runs scored (10), hits (14), doubles (4) home runs (3) and RBI (17) while batting .560 during the team’s 5-1 week. The senior had a 1.080 slugging percentage, knocking in six runs in the first of a three-game series against Wilkes, a 9-2 win.
Pitcher of the Week
Dave Trushel – Washington & Jefferson
College
Senior, Pitcher, Bethel Park, Pa.
Trushel allowed just one earned run in 16.0 innings, recording a 0.56 earned-run average. The senior threw the first shutout of his career, surrendering only two hits in a 1-0 win over Westminister on Sunday while tying a Presidents’ Athletic Conference single-season record with his seventh complete game.
