Men's Outdoor Track & Field

Men's Track and Field (for the week ending March 22, 2009)


Division I


Track Athlete of the Week

Domonick Sylve - U.S. Military Academy
Sophomore, Long Beach, Calif.

Sylve qualified for NCAA Regionals in the first outdoor meet of the season in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.24 at the USF Bulls Invitational.  He also placed fourth in the 100-meter with a time of 11.18 and ran a leg on the IC4A-qualifying 4x100 team that placed second.

Field Athlete of the Week

John Talbert - Liberty Universtiy
Freshman, Newton, Kan.

Talbert placed first out of 30 participants, and qualified for the NCAA East Regionals in the discus with a throw of 178-9 feet (54.48 meters).  The throw ranks him second in school history.  He also placed third out of 25 participants in the hammer throw with a distance of 173-2 feet (52.78 meters), qualifying him for IC4A's.

Division II


Track Athlete of the Week

Doug Caves - UMass-Lowell
Junior, Oxford, Mass.

Caves captured the 400-meter dash and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship at the Coastal Carolina Shamrock Invitational.  He ran the 400 in 47.56 to top a field of 53 runners.

Field Athlete of the Week

Maurice Calenda - American International College
Sophomore, Bloomfield, Conn.

Calenda won the triple jump with a distance of 13.96 meters and finished second in the long jump with a mark of 6.21 meters at the Northeastern Spring Open.  The sophomore also finished fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.07 seconds and ran the first leg of the winning 4x100 relay that set a school record in 43.53 seconds.


Division III


Track Athlete of the Week

Delannie Spriggs - Salisbury University
Junior, Owings, Md.

Spriggs tied his school-record and provisionally qualified for the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships with a time of 10.57 in the 100-meter dash at the Wake Forest Open.  On Saturday, the All-American again won the 100 in a time of 10.79 seconds.

Field Athlete of the Week

Kyle Mazur - Juniata College
Senior, Ogdensburg, N.J.

Mazur won the javelin competition at the Roanoke Invitational, helping Juniata win the eight-team meet.  His throw of 63.97 meters, automatically qualified him for the NCAA Championship and beat his previous best set back in 2007.  Mazur also placed third in the shot put with a toss of 12.20 meters.
