Men's Track and Field (for the week ending April 12, 2009)


Division I


Track Athlete of the Week

Brandon Jones - Hampton University
Junior, Virginia Beach, Va.


Jones won three events at the Colonial Relays last week and helped the Pirates to a ninth-place finish.  He won the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.13.  The junior anchored the 4x100 and 4x200 relays teams that won with times of 41.42 and 1:26.55.


Field Athlete of the Week

Victor Gilreath - University of Maryland-Baltimore County
Sophomore, Catonsville, Md.

Gilreath won two events at the Virginia Invitational with a mark of two meters in the high jump.  He also recorded an IC4A qualifying jump of 14.71 meters in the triple jump.


Division II


Co-Track Athletes of the Week

Donte Brown - University of Massachusetts-Lowell
Sophomore, Raynham, Mass.


Brown won the 400-meter dash at the UMass-Lowell George Davis Invitational with a time of 49.28 seconds.

Kency Gilet - Pace University
Senior, Nanuet, N.Y.

Gilet placed first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.49 at the Wesleyan Invitational.


Field Athlete of the Week

Cory Murray - University of Massachusetts-Lowell
Sophomore, Methuen, Mass.

At the UMass-Lowell George Davis Invitational, Murray won the shot put and set a meet record with a throw of 51-4.5 feet.  The sophomore topped the previous record of 50-4 feet set by a former River Hawk.


Division III


Track Athlete of the Week

Mike Heymann - SUNY Plattsburgh
Sophomore, Tully, N.Y.

Heymann automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:24.55 at the Bucknell University Bison Outdoor Classic.  He broke a 33-year old school record by 12 seconds and set the fastest time in Division III this season.  The sophomore finished fourth overall and second among collegiate runners.


Field Athlete of the Week

Erik Whiting - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Junior, Fultonville, N.Y.

Whiting posted an NCAA provisional mark in the hammer throw at the Liberty League Championships.  He posted a toss of 53.06 meters, placing first in the event.  The junior also finished third in the discus with a throw of 37.06 meters to lead the Engineers to their first Liberty League title since 2006.
