Men's Track and Field (for the week ending April 26, 2009)


Division I


Track Athlete of the Week

Sam Chelanga - Liberty University
Sophomore, Nairobi, Kenya

Chelanga broke the all-time NCAA 10,000-meter record with a time of 27:28.48 to win at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, California. He automatically qualified for the NCAA National Championship, clocking in five seconds faster than the standard mark.  The sophomore also reached an ‘A' qualifying time in the IAAF World Championships and posted the No. 1 time in the world this year.


Field Athlete of the Week

Larry Lundy - Monmouth University
Senior, Friendsville, Pa.

Lundy won gold at the Penn Relays, putting the shot over 60 feet for the first time in his career.  His distance of 60-10.75 feet qualified him for the NCAA East Region Championships, and made him the second Hawk to reach that mark in school history.


Division II


Track Athlete of the Week

Kevin Downing - University of New Haven
Freshman, Meriden, Conn.

Downing broke the school record and won the 100-meter dash at the Yale University Springtime Invitational with a time of 10.46 seconds, coming up .01 seconds short from automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships.  He also broke the previous record in the 200 with a time of 20.96 seconds.


Field Athlete of the Week

Mike Gray - Mansfield University
Junior, Horseheads, N.Y.

Gray won the shot put at the Big Red Invitational at Cornell University with a mark of 53-5.75 feet.  His toss was almost a foot further than the runner-up and the top throw in the PSAC this year.  The junior also finished in third place in the discus with a throw of 158-1 feet.


Division III


Co-Track Athletes of the Week

Peter Kosgei - Hamilton College
Junior, Kapsabet, Kenya

Kosgei repeated as champion in the 800 and 1,500-meter races at the 2009 NESCAC Championships at Connecticut College.  The junior broke his own NESCAC record in the 800 with a time of 1:50.44, while clocking in at 3:53.74 in the 1,500.

Marc Gomes - Westfield State College
Junior, Springfield, Mass.

Gomes won two individual races and two team relays to lead the Owls to their 13th straight MASCAC Championship.  He clocked in at 10.97 in the 100 and 21.77 in the 200, while anchoring the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.


Field Athlete of the Week

Matt Joseph - Rochester Institute of Technology
Senior, Pittsford, N.Y.

Joseph placed second out of 11 competitors at the Penn Relays in the decathlon with a career-high score of 6,338 points.  He recorded personal bests in the high jump (1.83 meters), 400-meter dash (51.60 seconds), 110 hurdles (15.54), discus (31.49 meters), pole vault (3.73 meters), and the 1,500 (4:34.28).  The senior finished first in the 110 hurdles and second in the javelin.
