Brown Upsets Top Seed Marist in Overtime to Take 2009 ECAC Division I Women's Water Polo Title
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - No. 2 seeded Brown University won its first ever ECAC Championship in Women's Water Polo, withstanding a late charge from the no. 1 seeded Marist Red Foxes in a 10-8 overtime thriller. Marist countered late in the fourth quarter with two goals to tie the game at 7-7, and eventually took the lead with 16 seconds remaining on a goal by Rachel Sunday (Carlisle, Penn.).
However, the Bears would not be denied as junior Sarah Glick (Bonita, Calif.) sent the game into overtime where Brown would score twice to seal their championship.
Brown goalkeeper Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, Mich.) took home ECAC Most Outstanding Player honors for her work between the pipes all weekend, as well as making some clutch saves in the championship match.
In the third-place match, no. 6 Wagner College squeaked by no. 4 George Washington, 9-8.
