Men's Basketball Players of the Week - Feb. 7, 2012
CENTERVILLE, Mass.--The Eastern College Athletic Conference Tuesday announced the men's basketball players of the week for Divisions I, II and III (four regions), for the period ending Feb. 5.
Division I Co-Player of the Week
Tray Woodall – University of Pittsburgh
Junior, Guard, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Woodall averaged 26.5 points while shooting 62.5 percent from the field in a pair of BIG EAST victories for the Panthers. The junior scored a career-high 29 points in Sunday’s 79-70 win over Villanova. Earlier in the week, Woodall scored 24 points in a win over West Virginia, 72-66.
Division I Co-Player of the Week
Lamont "Momo" Jones – Iona College
Junior, Guard, Harlem, N.Y.
Jones averaged 30.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals in a 2-0 week for the Gaels. The junior dropped 43 points, including a career-best 16 field goals along with seven 3-pointers, in a 105-86 win over Canisius on Thursday. His total was the second highest single-game scoring total in school history. It is also the highest single-game scoring total in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this season.
Division II Player of the Week
Tylon Smith -- Southern
Connecticut State University
Freshman, Guard, Manchester, Conn.
Smith averaged 19.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game during a 2-0 week for Southern Connecticut. The freshman followed a 15-point performance in an 82-65 win over Assumption by netting a career-high 23 points on 82 percent shooting in an 80-71 win over Saint Rose.
Division III – New England Region Player of the Week
DaQuan Brooks – Western Connecticut State
University
Senior, Guard, Atlanta, Ga.
Brooks became the first player in Colonials’ program history to score 2,000 points during a 45-point performance in a win over Connecticut College, 78-62, last Tuesday. The senior averaged 34.5 points per game over the 2-0 week for the Colonials.
Division III – Upstate Region Player of the Week
Julius Bryant – Fredonia State University
Senior, Forward, Buffalo, N.Y.
Bryant averaged 24.5 points in a pair of close State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchups for the Blue Devils. In a 73-69 win over Potsdam, Bryant scored 24 points, grabbing six boards. In Saturday’s 63-60 victory over Plattsburgh, the senior shot 6-of-8 from the floor, hitting 13 of his 18 free-throw attempts, to push Fredonia to 7-6 in conference play.
Division III – Metro Region Player of the Week
Carl Yaffe – New York University
Junior, Forward, Bethesda, Md.
Yaffe averaged 29.0 points and 7.5 rebounds to lead No. 19 NYU to a 2-0 week. On the road against Carnegie Mellon on Friday, the junior netted 22 points on 80 percent shooting and added eight rebounds in an 88-76 win. Yaffe then scored a career-high 36 points to go along with seven boards in the Violets’ 98-85 win at Case Western Reserve on Saturday. Yaffe’s 36 points are the most by a NYU athlete in a University Athletic Association (UAA) game since 1990.
Division III – South Region Player of the Week
Stefan Thompson – Alvernia University
Senior, Forward, Philadelphia, Pa.
Thompson tied a school record for three-pointers in a single game with eight during a 63-61 home victory over Lebanon Valley on Saturday. The senior finished the game with a career-high 30 points in the win en route to averaging 21.7 points while shooting 57 percent from outside the arc in a 3-0 week for the Crusaders.
