Men's Basketball Players of the Week - Jan. 31, 2012
CENTERVILLE, Mass.--The Eastern College Athletic Conference Tuesday announced the ECAC player of the week awards for men's basketball, representing NCAA Divisions I, II and ECAC III regions:
Division I Player of the Week
OD Anosike – Siena College
Junior, Forward, Staten Island, N.Y.
Anosike averaged 20 points and 15 rebounds while shooting 59 percent from the field to pace Siena in three conference games last week. In two victories, he scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds against first-place Iona at home and then had 21 points to go along with 12 boards versus Marist. The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week leads the nation with 12.9 rebounds per game and 17 double-doubles, tying former Wake Forest All-American Tim Duncan for the second-longest Division I streak in the latter over the last 15 seasons.
Division II Player of the Week
Matt Lee – Mercyhurst College
Sophomore, Guard, Bloomfield, N.J.
Lee poured in 25 points per game and averaged 4.5 rebounds to help Mercyhurst to a 2-0 week with wins over Edinboro and California. He also shot 58 percent from the field (20-of-34) and connected for 10 treys. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division Player of the Week had career highs of 29 points on 12-of-22 shooting, including five 3-pointers, and seven rebounds against the Fighting Scots. He added 21 points versus the Vulcans as the Lakers won their fifth-straight game.
Division III – New England Region Player of the Week
Ray Askew – Albertus Magnus College
Senior, Forward, Hamden, Conn.
Askew became just the second player in Falcons history to eclipse the 2,000-point plateau to help Albertus Magnus go 3-0 last week, extending the team’s 12-game winning streak. The Great Northeast Athletic Conference selection reached the milestone in Saturday’s win against Mount Ida after netting 31 points. For the week, he averaged 28 points, 12.3 rebounds, 2 steals and 1.5 blocks while shooting 53.4 percent from the field.
Division III – Upstate Region Player of the Week
Matthew Pooley – Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute
Senior, Guard, Middletown, N.Y.
The Liberty League Player of the Week led the Engineers to a 2-1 week, averaging 24.7 points on a .613 field goal percentage (27-of-44), including 56.5 percent (13-for-23) from the three-point line. Pooley began the week with a pair of 27-point performances in wins over Vassar (104-91) and Hobart (87-81). He wrapped it up with 20 points in a 108-99 loss at Union.
Division III – Metro Region Player of the Week
AJ Matthews—Farmingdale State College
Junior, Forward, Brooklyn, N.Y.
The recipient of this week’s Skyline Conference award, Matthews led the Rams to a pair of key league wins over Old Westbury in overtime (71-70) and Mount Saint Mary (76-55). In the first outing, he had 22 points and 19 rebounds. In the second, he posted 22 points and 23 rebounds to go along with a school-record nine blocked shots. He leads the nation in rebounding average at 15.6 rpg.
Division III – South Region Player of the Week
Nathan Bollinger – Delaware Valley
College
Sophomore, Guard, Hellam, Pa.
Bollinger averaged 27.7 points last week as the Aggies won two of three games. He contributed 12 assists and shot 82.1 percent (23-of-28) from the free throw line. He capped his week with a highlight-reel 50 points in a 95-85 overtime win over Freedom front-runner Wilkes, setting the school record for points in a game. He nailed one of his six 3-pointers in the contest with 2.1 seconds left in regulation to send the game into the extra session. He is the Middle Atlantic Conference Player of the Week and a current ECAC Video Play of the Week nominee.
