Women's Basketball Players of the Week - Jan. 31, 2012
CENTERVILLE, Mass.--The Eastern College Athletic Conference Tuesday announced the ECAC player of the week awards for women's basketball, representing NCAA Divisions I, II and ECAC III regions:
Women’s Basketball Players of the Week (for the period ending 1/29/12)
Division I
Tiffany Hayes – University of Connecticut
Senior, Guard, Lakeland, Fla.
Hayes recorded back-to-back 30-point games last week in two University of Connecticut victories. She put up a career-high 35 points as well as collecting seven rebounds in a 95-54 victory over Syracuse University. She also tallied 33 points and 10 rebounds in a 77-62 triumph over the University of South Florida. Her 68 points is the most a UConn player has scored in back-to-back games in program history and it is the first time a player has scored back-to-back 30-point games since Maya Moore in the 2010-11 season.
Division II
Sylvonya Moore – Southern Connecticut State
University
Senior, Guard, Stockton, Calif.
Moore averaged 25.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.5 steals in a 2-0 week for the Owls. The senior guard scored a career-high 30 points in a 66-60 victory over Southern New Hampshire University. She then contributed a much-needed 21 points in a close 63-59 win over No. 5-ranked Bentley University.
Co-Division III – New England Region
Deanna Purcell – Rivier College
Freshman, Guard, Hudson, N.H.
Purcell averaged 32.0 points, five assists and 7.5 rebounds in two Raider victories last week. She began the week powering Rivier to a 78-72 overtime victory over Emerson College with a lofty 39 points. The freshman guard then fell shy of a triple-double scoring 25 points, adding eight rebounds and nine assists in a 106-90 win over Saint Joseph College.
Co-Division III – New England Region
Keneisha Milton – Wheelock College
Junior, Guard/Forward, Boston, Mass.
Milton averaged 19.0 points and 20.0 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week for the Wildcats. She recorded the program’s first 20-20 performance scoring a career-high 24 points and bringing down 21 boards in a 52-32 victory over Lesley University. The junior ended her stellar week by scoring 14 points and collecting 19 rebounds in a 61-50 besting of Mitchell College.
Division III – Metro Region
April Smith – William Paterson University
Senior, Forward, Barnegat, N.J.
Smith collects her third ECAC Player of the Week honor after averaging 25.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week for No. 8-ranked William Paterson. The senior forward went 9-of-14 shooting on her way to a 20-point, 10-rebound effort in an 89-54 win at Drew University. She then posted her NCAA-leading 16th double-double of the season with a game-high 30 points and 12 rebounds to go along with five steals in a 78-63 victory over Rowan University.
Division III – Upstate Region
Kate Purcell – Hartwick College
Sophomore, Guard, Buffalo, N.Y.
Purcell averaged 18.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game in three Hartwick College victories last week. She began the week scoring a team-high 21 points in a 65-51 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology. The sophomore then collected a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds in a 68-46 win at Utica College and finished the week adding 16 points and six boards in a close 56-53 victory triumph over Ithaca College.
Division III – South Region
Christine Marks – Misericordia University
Senior, Center, Milford, Pa.
Marks collected three double-double games and averaged 24.3 points and 13.3 rebounds in a 2-1 week for Misericordia. She highlighted her week by scoring 36 points and grabbing 17 rebounds in a 74-57 victory over Marywood University. The senior registered a strong performance in a tight 71-69 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson University – Florham, posting 17 points to go along with 13 boards.
