Women's Basketball Players of the Week

Women’s Basketball Players of the Week (for the period ending 1/16/12)

Division I

Brittany Wilson – La Salle University
Redshirt Junior, Guard, Pawtucket, R.I.

Wilson put together two stellar performances averaging 29.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists , leading the Explorers to their first 3-0 start in Atlantic-10 Conference play since the 1996-97 season. Her career highs of 31 points and seven assists led her team to a 68-62 victory over Fordham. She followed up that game with 28 points in a 63-61 besting of Xavier University.

Division II

Mallory Moore – Mansfield University of Pennsylvania
Senior, Guard, Beech Creek, Pa.

Moore averaged 18.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.5 steals in Mansfield's 1-1 week. Highlighting her performance was a 20-for-21 showing from the free throw line (95.2 percent). In Wednesday's 70-58 win over East Stroudsburg, Moore scored 19 points, hauled in nine boards, dished out five assists and blocked a pair of shots while making 10-of-11 free throws. She followed that up with 18 points, nine boards, four assists and six steals while making all 10 of her free throw attempts in a loss to Shippensburg. She is now just one of three players in Mansfield history with 1,300 points and 700 rebounds.

Division III – New England Region

Catherine O’Connell – Newbury College
Junior, Center, Quincy, Mass.

O’Connell averaged 20.0 points and 19.0 rebounds per game in a 2-1 week for Newbury College. The junior center proved to be unstoppable in the paint after grabbing 21 rebounds and adding 18 points in a 73-65 victory over Bay Path College. She continued her week with a 17-point, 14-rebound effort in a 76-44 triumph over Becker College. O’Connell finished off her week with a career-high of 25 points and pulling down a lofty 22 boards (14 offensive) in a 69-61 setback to Elms College.

Division III – Metro Region

April Smith – William Paterson University
Senior, Forward, Barnegat, N.J.

Smith collected her second ECAC award in three weeks after averaging 25.0 points and 14.0 rebounds per game for William Paterson. The senior registered 16 points and 12 rebounds in a 59-54 victory over Rutgers-Newark to open up the week. She then scored a career-high 34 points to go along with 16 rebounds, three blocks and two steals in an 88-84 setback to Kean University. It was her 12th double-double of the season.

Division III – Upstate Region

Maliqua Fisher – SUNY New Paltz
Junior, Guard, North Babylon, N.Y.

Fisher led New Paltz to a 3-0 week by averaging 17.3 points in those contests. The junior tallied 24 points, eight rebounds and an impressive nine steals in a 70-52 victory over SUNY Potsdam. She then scored 16 in a 66-53 come-from-behind win over SUNY Oswego. Fisher concluded the week with a 12-point, seven-rebound effort in a 68-60 triumph over SUNY Cortland.

Division III – South Region

Alexandra Blair – Moravian College
Senior, Forward, Easton, Pa.

Blair averaged 16.7 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game in a 3-0 week for Moravian College. She began the week by scoring 20 points and collecting five boards in an 83-81 loss to Eastern University. The senior followed up that performance with 12 points and 17 rebounds in a 64-49 victory over U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. She also shined with an 18-point, nine-rebound effort in a 60-52 win over Drew University.
