Div. III Women's Basketball Players of the Week

For the week ending January 22, 2007

Division III - Upstate

Player of the Week

Sara Cavanaugh - State University College at Cortland
Junior, Forward,
Hastings-on-the-Hudson, N.Y.

Cavanaugh powered her team with 30 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 6 blocks as the Red Dragons picked up a 77-72 overtime victory over Geneseo. She also tied a school record with 8 three-pointers in that conference win on Friday. On Saturday, Cavanaugh scored 20 points and added 8 boards as Cortland defeated Oswego 65 -59 for their 13th consecutive win.  On the week, Cavanaugh averaged 25 points per game while shooting almost 50% from the field (19-37). She connected on 8 of 19 from beyond the arc and remained perfect at the charity line (6-6). Her weekly stats total includes 50 points, 14 rebounds, 5 steals and 9 blocks.

Player of the Week

Andrea Hochstuhl - King's College
Junior, Center,
Landenburg, Pa.

Highlights:  Hochstuhl enjoyed a banner week in leading King's to a 2-0 mark, both Freedom Conference road victories.  In a 64-42 win over Lycoming, she scored 19 points with career highs of 17 rebounds and six blocked shots.  In a 78-61 victory at FDU, she added 17 points and 16 rebounds with seven blocked shots, breaking her career high set just three days earlier.  For the week, Hochstuhl averaged 18.0 points, 16.5 rebounds, 6.5 blocks, 2.5 assists, and 1.5 steals. She also helped the Lady Monarchs to their seventh straight victory as King's improved to 12-5 and 4-2 in Freedom Conference play.

Player of the Week

Melissa Escalera - John Jay College
Senior, Forward,
Bronx, N.Y.

The senior averaged 35.5 points and 11.0 rebounds in John Jay's two conference victories last week.  The Bronx native converted 27-of-37 field goal attempts (73 percent) and was also 17-fof-20 (85 percent) from the line.  The 6-0 forward erupted for 36 points (14-for-18 fga) and added seven rebounds and four steals in the 65-55 win versus City Tech (1/17).  Escalera remained on fire with 35 points, 15 rebounds, two steals, and two blocks against York on January 19th.

Co-Players of the Week

Sarah Cox - Trinity College
Senior, Forward/Guard -
Norwell, Mass.

Cox led all scores during three games last week, averaging 24.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals for Trinity. On Tuesday, Cox scored 25 points while picking up six rebounds, five assists and three steals in a win over Babson. She continued the week with 18 points and seven rebounds against Williams on Friday before earning a double-double on Saturday against Middlebury with 29 points and 10 boards. For the week, Cox was 50- percent from the field (29-for-58) and 11-for-13 from the foul line.

LaKeisha Tucker - University of Massachusetts, Boston
Junior, Guard,
Pawtucket, R.I.

In three games, Tucker was nothing if not consistent in leading UMass Boston to a 3-0 week, averaging 23 points, 7.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 2.0 steals, and a block. She shot 51.2 percent from the floor (22-for-43), including 56.3 percent from 3-point range (9-for-16), while converting on 89 percent from the foul line. On Jan. 18, Tucker scored 25 points on 8-for-13 from the floor, while hauling in six rebounds and handing out a season-high six assists to lift the Beacons past Bridgewater State. In the conference circuit, she registered a double-double, against UMass Dartmouth on Jan. 18, netting 22 points, including hitting 4-for-7 from long range, and grabbing a career-high 12 rebounds. Four days later, Tucker also recorded 22 points and collected five caroms at Eastern Connecticut to lead UMass Boston to its first season sweep over the Warriors since 1993-94.
