Week 3: Browns Sobuta and Brockport's Gildemeyer Earn Weekly ECAC Honors
Division I
Gymnast of the Week
Jennifer Sobuta, Brown University
Junior, Maynard, Mass.
Scores from the week:
VT: 9.575 UB:9.05 BB 9.8 FX:9.6 AA: 38.025
Sobuta stepped up and had the best meet of her entire career. She has added difficulty to her routines and seems more determined and driven. In a tough meet against Bowling Green, Bridgeport, MIT and West Chester, she had our top score on vault (9.575), beam (9.8) and the all-around (38.025). Sobuta scored a personal best on beam and won the event! She also earned a personal best in the all-around and placed third. One of the highlights of her performance came on the bars when she stood up her double front dismount for the first time ever in competition. She has become one of our most valuable performers due to her dedication and hard work.
Rookie of the Week
Melissa Cream, The College of William & Mary
Freshman, West Windsor, NJ
Scores from the week:
UB: 9.575 BB 9.25 FX:9.475
After a bit of a rough first meet, Cream came back this week and hit three-for-three. She was one of the top performers (a counting score) on every event she competed on at West Virginia University. She had poise and a great performance on FX, smiling at every moment.
Specialist of the Week
Whitney Diederich, Brown University
Junior, Naperville, IL
Score from the week:
FX: 9.6
Diederich was out first semester with a broken foot. Determined to help her team, she began training just before our first meet and quickly proved she was going to be a strong force for Brown on the floor. As a one-event specialist, she works hard to raise the bar for the Bears. Before this season, her personal best was a 9.425. She earned a 9.55 in our second meet this season. In our home opener last weekend, she surpassed that with a new personal best 9.6.
Co-Coach's Choice
Jordan Brewer, University of Pennsylvania
Junior, Durham, NC
Scores from the week:
VT:9.575 UB:9.0 BB:9.625 FX: 9.6 AA: 37.80
Brewer was once again a key player for Penn this weekend at Yale. Each week, Brewer becomes more consistent and confident in the all-around. Last year, she did not train or compete on bars. After working hard to put together a routine for this season, she is truly becoming a stand out all-around athlete for our team. This weekend, she scored a 9.575 on vault for first place overall. On bars she scored a 9.0. On beam she earned a 9.625, tying for first place and on floor she scored a 9.60. In the all-around, she totaled a 37.80, tying for second overall. Brewer is Penn's anchor on two events and is competing better each week. She is making a great adjustment in practice and competition and turning into an amazing all-around athlete for our team.
Co-Coach's Choice of the Week
Laura Lombardi, Yale
University
Senior, Battle Creek, Mich.
Scores from the week:
VT: 9.225 UB: 9.575 BB: 9.5
In her freshman year she injured and tore the anterior and posterior circulate, and had damage to her meniscus and MCL. Doctors decided it was inoperable but she was determined to compete and began competition with bars. As a sophomore she added beam and began to vault last year as a junior. Over the weekend Lombardi placed second in bars .025 behind the first place score with a 9.575, third place on beam .125 out of first with a 9.50 and seventh in vault with a 9.225. Her scores helped lead Yale to its high this year of 188.575 and win over Penn. If it were not for the very serious knee injury she would be an outstanding all around competitor this, her senior year.
Division III
Gymnast of the Week
Lauren Gildemeyer, SUNY-Brockport
Sophomore, Baldwinsville, NY
Gildemeye scored 37.95 in All Around to help Brockport to a win over Springfield and host Rhode Island College on Saturday January 26. She placed first on floor (9.775), first on vault (9.65), second on beam (9.45) and third on bars (9.05).
Rookie of the Week
Robyn Albert, Rhode Island College
Freshman, Sharon, Mass.
Albert led Rhode Island College on three events this past Saturday and was the Anchorwomen's top all-rounder. She received a 9.075 on vault from a beautifully stuck piked yurchenko, an 8.925 on bars, an 8.6 on Beam and a 9.15 on Floor. Her all-around was a 35.75 which placed her in second place in the meet against Brockport and Springfield. She has overcome ankle surgery from last year and abdominal surgery this past summer.
Specialist of the Week
Amber French, SUNY-Cortland
Senior, South Glens Falls, NY
Amber hit 2 for 2 this weekend in a home meet against Division I Cornell on Sunday January 28. She finished third on vault with a 9.5 and finished first on floor with a 9.575. Both performances were outstanding!
