Tom Ehrhardt, a three-time ECAC Division II and I-AA Player of the Year, was a standout football player at LIU Post and the University of Rhode Island.  Ehrhardt played two seasons, 1981 and 1982 in Brookville, New York before transferring to the University of Rhode Island. The signal-caller eventually signed with the New York Jets and later went on to play for the Cincinnati Bengals.  During his 1981 season at LIU Post, Ehrhardt, a freshman, threw for 2,179 yards and 20 touchdowns. In his final game as a Pioneer, he was 34-of-54 for 432 yards and six touchdowns against Merchant Marine Academy.

While donning the Rams’ uniform, Ehrhardt broke a number of New England records, including most career touchdowns (78), most touchdowns in a game (8), most yards passing in a game (566) and most touchdowns in a season (42).  In addition to the regional marks, Ehrhardt attempted an NCAA record 78 passes in an NCAA playoff game in 1985. Ehrhardt was also an All-New England, and All-Yankee Conference selection in 1984 and 1985 and Conference Player of the Year in 1985.

Along with the individual accomplishments, he also led the Rams to a pair of Conference championships and two NCAA playoff appearances, in which the team advanced to the semifinals in 1984. The Rams finished second in the national polls that year and seventh in 1985. Ehrhardt, who won several Golden Helmets, symbolic of the top weekly performance in New England football, is the only football player in Ram history to have his number (12) retired.
