Corvias ECAC Men's Soccer Players of the Week (Week Ending Oct. 4)
DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced the Corvias ECAC Men’s Soccer Players of the Week for the week ending Oct. 4.
DIVISION I
Offensive Player of the Week
Sean Sheridan – Villanova University, Sr., Midfield, Levittown, Pa.
Sheridan posted six points last week, as he scored both game-winning goals in a 2-0-0 week for Villanova. Sheridan had a hand in all four goals scored by the Wildcats last week with two goals and two assists. Against Marquette on Saturday, the senior midfielder scored in the 78th minute on a left-footed shot from 12 yards out. In the 45th minute, Sheridan set up Lucas Hodges' header with a corner, tying the game at 1-1 going into halftime. Against La Salle, Sheridan scored in the 65th minute off a free kick just outside the box, breaking the scoreless tie with the eventual game-winning shot.
Defensive Player of the Week
Jordan Stagmiller – St. John’s University, r-Sr., Goalkeeper, Avondale, Ariz.
Stagmiller earns Defensive Player of the Week honors after a five save, two-shutout week that included a 1-0 victory over BIG EAST foe Seton Hall. Sagmiller had three saves against Central Connecticut State and two against Seton Hall for the win.
Rookie of the Week
Mark Forrest – Lehigh University, Fr., Forward, Douglasville, Pa.
Forrest was responsible for all of Lehigh’s scoring in the Mountain Hawks’ Tuesday night contest with Fordham, notching a trio of goals in the 3-0 victory over the Rams. The freshman scored in the 12th, 65th, and 83rd minutes and now has a total of four goals on the season. Forrest’s hat trick marks the first for a Lehigh player since Oct. 6, 2007, when Kyle Evans scored all the goals in a 3-0 home victory over Navy. The rookie also played a key role in keeping pressure on Colgate’s defense in a 1-0 win over the Raiders on Saturday.
DIVISION II
Offensive Player of the Week
Louis Greenway-Tambini – Southern Connecticut State University, So., Midfield/Forward, Nottingham, England.
Louis Greenway-Tambini scored two goals last week, both coming in the 5-1 over Saint Anselm on Saturday. He scored the first two goals of the game for the Owls, both in the first half. The goals were his sixth and seventh on the year, which currently leads the conference.
Defensive Player of the Week
Andrew Hamerlinck – Lindenwood University, Sr., Goalkeeper, Springfield, Ill.
Hamerlinck contributed to the Lions’ win at No. 12 Upper Iowa last week, making five saves on 15 shots faced to help Lindenwood to a slim, 1-0 win.
Rookie of the Week
Weens Simon – Southern Connecticut State University, Fr., Midfield/Forward, Fort Meyers, Fla.
Simon logged big minutes in both the Owls’ games last week. He scored his first goal of the year against American Int’l off his own rebound - it was the game-tying goal in an eventual 2-2 tie for the Owls.
DIVISION III New England Region
Offensive Player of the Week
Diego Slobotzky – Endicott College, Sr., Forward/Midfied, Mexico City, Mexico
Slobotzky recorded just the second hat trick in program history and gave the Gulls all the offense they needed in a 3-0 victory over regional rival UMass-Dartmouth last week. Slobotzky found the back of the net three times in the second half as Endicott won its sixth-straight match, all by shutout.
Defensive Player of the Week
Alfonso Rosales – UMass Boston, Sr., Goalkeeper, Revere, Mass.
Rosales became the Beacons’ all-time wins leader last week, earning his 26th and 27th career victories. He needed only five stops on the week, all against Bridgewater State, to help UMB remain undefeated and earn two 1-0 shoutous. Currently, Rosales paces all of NCAA Division III in save percentage (.955) and goals against average (0.16).
Rookie of the Week
Ryan Kinsella – Worcester State University, Fr., Midfield, Wilmington, Mass.
Kinsella tallied seven points on three goals and an assist in a 2-0 week for the Lancers. The midfielder recorded two goals and an assist in a 7-0 win over Becker College before adding another goal in the 2-0 win over Fitchburg State.
DIVISION III Upstate Region
Offensive Player of the Week
Luke Pavone – Buffalo State College, Jr., Midfield, Churchville, N.Y.
Pavone had three goals and an assist in two more Buffalo State victories. He tallied two goals and an assist in a 5-1 victory at D'Youville on Thursday, and then added another goal as he helped the Bengals remain unbeaten in SUNYAC play with a 2-0 win over Fredonia on Saturday.
Defensive Player of the Week
Chris Gutierrez – Alfred University, So., Goalkeeper, Holbrook, N.Y.
Gutierrez earned his fourth shutout of the season as the Saxons topped Empire 8 foe, Nazareth College on Saturday on the road. Nazareth fired off 13 shots on Saturday, making it the second most shots that Gutierrez has faced this season. Out of those shots, nine were on target and Gutierrez stopped all of them for a season and career-high in saves.
Rookie of the Week
Aidan Gray – Elmira College, Fr., Defense, Forestville, Australia
Gray helped Elmira extend its unbeaten streak to five games, as the Soaring Eagles posted back-to-back road wins against Marywood University and Utica College. He entered the week with not a single point to his name but ended the week with six points on three goals. He scored his first collegiate goal against Marywood, one that tied the game at 2-2 in the second half. Against Utica, he scored a pair of goals for the Soaring Eagles in the 56th and 85th minutes. His two goals against Utica helped Elmira win their first road game against the Pioneers since 2009.
DIVISION III Metro Region
Offensive Player of the Week
Brandon Melendez Ruiz – Lehman College, So., Midfield, Yonkers, N.Y.
Ruiz posted five points on two goals and an assist this week, with both goals standing as game-winning tallies. To start the week, the sophomore midfielder helped his team capture a victory with a game winning goal off a free kick in a 2-1 overtime win against York. In their next game against Hunter, Ruiz scored another golden goal as time expired in the second half to give the Lightning a 4-3 victory after assisting on a goal earlier in the game.
Defensive Player of the Week
Matt Broomall – Rutgers University – Newark, Sr., Goalkeeper, Somers Point, N.J.
Broomall anchored a Rutgers-Newark defense that did not allow a goal in a 2-0 week. He totaled four saves on the week, including three key stops in a 1-0 win over Ramapo while facing 14 total shots. He added one save in a win over NJCU. With two shutouts on the week, Broomall lowered his goals against average to 1.31, while also helping the Scarlet Raiders extend their streak of not conceding a goal to 186 minutes and counting.
Rookie of the Week
Phillip Lefkowitz – College of Staten Island, Fr., Forward, Staten Island, N.Y.
Lefkowitz garners Rookie of the Week honors after scoring a crucial game-tying goal for CSI last week. The freshman came off the bench late in the first half against City College of New York and leveled the score at 1-1. The Dolphins would go on to post a 2-1 win over their league rivals.
DIVISION III South Region
Offensive Player of the Week
Nick Stewart – Penn State Behrend, Sr., Midfield, Pittsburgh, Pa.
Stewart led Penn State Behrend in scoring with two goals and an assist in a 2-0 week for the Lions. With a goal in each of their tilts, the senior extended his current goal-scoring streak to five games. He also added an assist on the game-winning goal in a win over Franciscan University.
Defensive Player of the Week
Greg Gengaro – Gwynedd Mercy University, Sr., Goalkeeper, Bloomsbury, N.J.
Gengaro recorded two shutouts this week for the Griffins. He stopped eight shots in conference action against Marywood on Oct. 3, making four in the overtime periods in the Griffins’ 0-0 draw. On Monday he made five saves in a 1-0 shutout victory over Penn State-Brandywine. Overall for the week Gengaro made 15 stops posting a 0.32 GAA.
Rookie of the Week
Guy Nabo – Frostburg State University, Fr., Forward, Gaithersburg, Md.
Nabo recorded two goals and an assist in a 2-0 week for the Bobcats. With the Bobcats trailing Wesley, 2-1, late in regulation on Saturday, Nabo headed in the game-tying goal in the 74th minute. The freshman then assisted on Jonathan Lippitt's eventual game-winner in the 80th minute to give Frostburg State a dramatic 3-2 CAC victory. Earlier in the week, Nabo tallied the first goal in the Bobcats' 5-1 romp over Penn State Altoona.
About the ECAC
The ECAC is the nation's largest athletic and the only multi-divisional conference in the country with more than 300 Divisions I, II, and III colleges and universities. Established in 1938, the ECAC, a non-profit service organization, sponsors nearly 100 championships in 37 men and women's sports and assigns more than 4,400 officials in 12 sports. The ECAC also administers nine affiliate sports organizations and six playing leagues, and through the public relations arm of the conference, more than 5,000 student-athletes in 25 sports are recognized annually. Finally, the ECAC serves as the primary conference for select members in the sports of men and women's ice hockey and men's lacrosse.
