Ramapo Captures 2015 New England Regional Crown In Extra-Inning Victory Over MIT
May 16, 2015
Ramapo Postgame Interview | Walk-Off Victory Video
HARWICH, Mass. – Senior Scott Peschiani (Harriman, N.Y.) lofted a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 13th and freshman Connor Walsh (Waldwick, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with one run scored and a trio of walks as they both helped third-seeded Ramapo defeat fifth-seed MIT, 6-5, in the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship game this evening at Whitehouse Field.
With the victory, the Roadrunners (32-14) have earned a spot in the Division III College World Series in Appleton, Wisconsin and begin play on Friday, May 22. They make their second appearance in the World Series and first since 1984, when they won the National Championship.
MIT, who ended the series with a record of 4-2, earned a berth to their first ever regional title game. The Engineers (29-14) were also making the program’s fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and fourth in the last five years.
En-Route to Most Outstanding Player honors, Walsh had an impressive tournament for Ramapo as he stroked .438 (7-16) with six runs, two RBI and a trio of walks to help pace an offensive attack that batted .306 over the course of the regional.
It was a thrilling title tilt as the two squads traded the lead three times and the score was tied on two occasions in the later innings of the contest.
Trailing 3-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Roadrunners took over the one-run margin on a RBI single by sophomore Robert DeAngelis (Staten Island, N.Y.) and a run scoring at-bat by junior Joe Venturino (Barnegat Light, N.J.).
The Scarlet and Gray came right back and knotted up the game at 4-4 in the top of the eighth. Freshman Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) plated freshman Garrett Greenwood (Edmond, Okla.), who reached on an infield bunt single and moved into scoring position when the next batter was hit by a pitch.
Ramapo pushed across the go-ahead tally in the next half inning as Walsh scampered home with the bases juiced on a misplayed ball by the second baseman.
Down to their final three outs, the Engineers forced extras and made it a 5-5 contest as senior Hayden Cornwell (Newport Beach, Calif.) launched a solo home run to left field, his seventh of the year.
After blowing the save in the top of the eighth, senior Walker Larson (Mahwah, N.J.) earned the victory in relief as he spun four scoreless frames of three-hit baseball. Larson (10-2) hurled 5.1 frames overall while ringing up six on strikes.
Ramapo used the effort on the mound to produce the game-winning score in the bottom of the 13th inning.
DeAngelis sparked the rally, leading off the frame with a double to the gap in left center. Following back-to-back intentional walks put him 90 feet away from home plate, Peschiani ended the game, lifting a deep fly ball to left, scoring DeAngelis.
MIT staked the original 1-0 edge in the top of the second on a solo home run to left field by junior Kendall Helbert (St. Louis, Mo.), his first of the season.
The Roadrunners manufactured runs with two away in the bottom of the third on a double by senior Chris Werr (Pequannock, N.J.) and an infield knock by Peschiani.
The Engineers retook the 3-2 margin in the top of the fifth as senior Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.) traded places with sophomore John Drago (Peoria, Ariz.) on a double before Tew touched home plate on an errant throw by the third baseman.
Freshman Zach Michaud (Moorestown, N.J.) shouldered the setback in relief for the Scarlet and Gray. Michaud (2-1) allowed one earned run on two hits to go with three walks and he did not record a strikeout.
MIT actually outhit their opponents, 13-12, as Tew logged three – which included a pair of doubles. Drago and Reiser also notched two safeties apiece.
Walsh, DeAngelis and senior Scott Shields (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) all finished with a duo of base knocks to pace the Ramapo line-up.

Reiser’s Walk-Off Home-Run In 12th Sends MIT Into New England Regional Championship Round
May 16, 2015
MIT Postgame Interview | Salem State Postgame Interview
HARWICH, Mass. – Senior Phil Reiser (Alpharetta, Ga.) connected on a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 12th to help lift fifth-seeded MIT to a 2-1 victory over fourth-seeded Salem State University on the fourth day of the NCAA Division III New England Regional at Whitehouse Field.
The Engineers (29-13) move ahead to the championship game to take on third-seeded Ramapo at 4:35 p.m.
Since falling to Salem State in their opener on Wednesday in a 6-2 decision, the Scarlet and Gray have rattled off four consecutive wins out of the loser’s bracket and avenged their loss earlier in the week to the Vikings this afternoon.
The Vikings, who end their season at 27-15, posted a pair of NCAA Tournament victories in their fifth national playoffs appearance.
Reiser put the Engineers up 1-0 as he belted a double down the left field line, which scored junior Nate Rodman (Corevallis, Ore.) on the play. Rodman began the frame by chopping a single to center.
SSU junior Richard Fecteau (Newbury, Mass.) knotted the game, 1-1, hammering the first pitch he saw to start off the top of the fourth with a solo home run to right field. The blast for Fecteau was his third of the campaign.
After permitting two runners to reach base, freshman Andrew McLaughlin (Peabody, Mass.) set down 14 straight until the eighth. MIT went to their bullpen early and matched the effort, pumping out zeros until the Vikings threatened in the top of the seventh.
With one out on the scoreboard as runners stood on second and third, Engineer junior Michael Wymer (Flower Mound, Texas) calmly quelled the threat by inducing a deep fly to center and a strikeout.
Salem State had another golden opportunity in the very next frame to push across the go-ahead run following a sophomore Teghan Malionek (Salem, Mass.) two-bagger, but Wymer again reached back and ended the inning with a punch out.
In the bottom of the eighth, MIT put runners on the corners with one out on the scoreboard. The Vikings, however, got out of dodge as freshman Rafael Tylus (Danvers, Mass.) retired consecutive batters to end the inning.
Wymer responded in a tie ball game as he set down the side in order in three consecutive frames through the top of the 11th. Wymer also preserved his clean sheet, getting out of a first-and-third, no out jam in the 12th.
The Engineers used the momentum to end the contest on Reiser’s game-winning home run. He crushed a 1-0 offering over the right field fence for his first home run of the season.
Wymer fanned eight over 5.2 innings of three-hit baseball as he registered his first winning decision of the year.
Tylus (0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief for the Vikings as he surrendered one earned run on three hits in 3.1 innings.
Rodman went 3-for-5 while Reiser finished with a pair of base-knocks to propel a nine-hit attack. Senior Kevin Carens (Northboro, Mass.) was the lone repeat hitter for the Vikings, ending with a 3-for-5 performance at the top of the order.
The two squads accounted for 21 runners on base, including 11 left in scoring position.

MIT Staves Off Elimination With 4-1 Victory Over Wesleyan In Losers Bracket Final
May 15, 2015
MIT Postgame Interview | Wesleyan Postgame Interview
HARWICH, Mass. – Senior K.J. Parent (Knoxville, Tenn.) tossed a five-hitter and freshman Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) went 3-for-3 with one run scored as both propelled fifth-seeded MIT to a 4-1 triumph over second-seeded Wesleyan this evening at the NCAA Division III New England Baseball Regional on Friday at Whitehouse Field.
The Engineers (27-14) advanced to play fourth-seeded Salem State in an elimination game at 12 p.m. tomorrow for the right to take on third-seeded Ramapo in the New England Regional Championship at 4 p.m.
The Cardinals (30-11) bow out of their second consecutive NCAA Tournament and the program’s third overall.
Wesleyan senior Sam Goodwin-Boyd (Florence, Mass.) snapped a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth with his team-best sixth home run of the season on a deep fly to left center.
MIT responded by knotting up the score 1-1 in the top of the sixth. Junior Nate Rodman (Corvallis, Ore.) plated Filiere, who started off the frame with an infield single to the shortstop.
Sophomore Will O’Sullivan (Needham, Mass.) gave the Cardinals a golden opportunity to score by belting a double into the gap in right center, however, Parent ignored the threat and retired the next three batters in order to end the inning.
The Engineers built off their momentum and took the 4-1 lead in the top of the eighth by taking advantage of a pair of infield miscues.
Cornwell sparked MIT with a single through the left side to lead off the stanza and then came around to score on a two-base error on a botched sacrifice by the pitcher. Senior Phil Reiser (Alpharetta, Ga.) tacked on some insurance on a deep fly ball to bring in Rodman before freshman Garrett Greenwood (Edmond, Okla.) added another tally on a solo knock to the right side of the infield.
Wesleyan had chances in the final two innings to answer, but failed to capitalize when senior Donnie Cimino (Westood, N.J.) was plunked by a pitch in the eighth and junior Eric Jones (Ridgewood, N.J.) reached on a dropped fly ball in the infield.
Parent (5-0) fanned nine in the complete-game effort as he allowed one earned run, two walks and he plunked a pair of batters on 151 pitches (90 strikes).
Young (0-2) absorbed the loss for the Cardinals. He scattered eight hits over eight-plus innings of work to go with two runs (one earned), seven strikeouts and a trio of free passes.
Eight of nine starters in the order for the Engineers notched at least one base knock for a final total of 11. Rodman was the only other multi-hitter with a 2-for-5 effort at the dish while Filiere reached base five times.
Cimino had two of his squad’s five hits as he ended his career establishing a new program standard with 240 base hits.

Rinsky and Curto Fuel Ramapo’s 6-3 Win Over Salem State
May 15, 2015
Ramapo Postgame Interview | Salem State Postgame Interview
HARWICH, Mass. – Junior catcher Ryan Rinsky (North Caldwell, N.J.) put together a 3-for-3, four RBI performance with his first collegiate home run to lead Ramapo College to a 6-3 win over Salem State University in the finals of the winners bracket at the 2015 NCAA Division III New England Baseball Regional.
The Roadrunners (31-14) are now just one win away from reaching the NCAA Division III College Baseball World Series. Ramapo will have to be beaten twice by the last team standing amongst Salem State, MIT and Wesleyan University. MIT and Wesleyan will battle Friday night for the right to play the Vikings (27-14) on Saturday at noon.
On the mound, freshman right-hander Brian Cottrell (Brick, N.J.) notched the victory after allowing two earned runs, one walk and he struck out three in 5.2 innings of action.
Sophomore left-hander Tyler Curto (Stamford, Conn.) was masterful in relief of Cottrell, tossing 3.1 hitless innings on the way to registering the first save of this year’s NCAA Regional. Curto entered the game in the sixth inning with runners on second and third and two outs, but he got senior Mike Davis (Peabody, Mass.) to immediately fly out to end the threat.
On the other side, junior right-hander Cato Lacroix (Holliston, Mass.) was tagged with the loss after giving up four earned runs in five innings of work. Offensively, Davis posted a team-high three hits while senior Kevin Carens (Northborough, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs.
Freshman Dan Connors (Danvers, Mass.) put the Vikings on the board in the top of the third inning, singling through the left side to give Salem State a 1-0 lead. Davis, who scored on the Connors single, roped a double down the left field line with one out.
Ramapo answered back in a big way in the bottom half of the inning as Rinsky smacked a solo home run over the left-field fence.
Rinsky struck again in the fourth, ripping a double to right-center field to plate two more runs and provide the Roadrunners with a 3-1 advantage.
The Vikings sliced into the deficit in the sixth, stringing together three consecutive singles to lead to a two RBI base hit up the middle by Carens that put Salem State within on run at 4-3.
Ramapo tacked on a couple more insurance tallies in the bottom half of the sixth. Following three straight singles, Rinsky produced his fourth RBI of the day by getting hit by a pitch. Sophomore Rob DeAngelis (Staten Island, N.Y.) then capped off Ramapo’s scoring output, lifting a sacrifice fly to right field that scored freshman Connor Walsh (Waldwick, N.J.).

MIT Blanks Curry, 3-0, To Stay Alive In New England Regional
May 15, 2015
MIT Postgame Interview | Curry Postgame Interview
HARWICH, Mass. – Senior Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.) went 2-for-4 with a home run and all three RBI and junior Alan Wang (Paoli, Pa.) twirled a six-hit shutout as both paced fifth-seeded MIT to a 3-0 triumph over seventh-seeded Curry this afternoon on the third day of the NCAA Division III New England Baseball Regional at Whitehouse Field.
The Engineers (27-13) move ahead to the second elimination game of the day to play second-seeded Wesleyan at 7:45 PM. The Colonels, who secured their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory on Thursday in the program’s second appearance in the national playoffs, see their season come to an end at 24-15.
After freshman Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) reached on a one-out single, Tew followed with an RBI double to center, which gave MIT the early 1-0 edge in the bottom of the first.
With sophomore John Drago (Peoria, Ariz.) standing on first two innings later, Tew stroked the first pitch he saw into left field for a two-run blast to give the Cardinal and Gray the 3-0 margin. Drago jump-started the frame with a clean solo knock to left.
Facing the early three-run deficit, Curry senior Thomas Fitzpatrick (South Boston, Mass.) kept his squad in the game as he held MIT scoreless in his final five innings of work.
Fitzpatrick (6-3) surrendered three earned runs over his eight innings, ringing up seven on strikes while not issuing a free pass.
Curry had a hard time figuring out Wang, who was solid on the mound for the Engineers as he did not allow a batter to get past third base for the duration of the contest.
The Colonels’ best chance was in the top of the first when freshman Evan Morris (Pembroke, Mass.) singled with two outs and Wang hit junior Philip Perez (West Covina, Calif.), however, he ended the threat with a groundout.
Wang (7-1), who hurled his first complete game of the campaign, fanned five and walked one batter. His only other career shutout was a seven-inning, one-hit victory, last year on April 14 against Curry in a 14-0 regular-season win.
Reiser was also 2-for-4 with a double to start off the seventh while Perez and sophomore Nick Crivello (Millville, Mass.) each notched two singles apiece to lead the Colonels.

Rantz, Schaefer Help Wesleyan Eliminate Top-Seeded Southern Maine, 4-1
May 15, 2015
Wesleyan Postgame Interview | Southern Maine Postgame Interview
HARWICH, Mass. – Junior Peter Rantz (Boca Raton, Fla.) fired seven scoreless frames and sophomore Ellis Schaefer (Newtown Square, Pa.) went 3-for-3 as both paced second-seeded Wesleyan to a 4-1 triumph over top-seeded Southern Maine this morning on the third day of the NCAA Division III New England Baseball Regional at Whitehouse Field.
The Cardinals (30-10) advance to tonight’s second elimination game at 7:45 p.m. where they will take on the winner of the 1:15 matchup between fifth-seeded MIT and seventh-seeded Curry College. The Huskies, making their 22nd appearance in the NCAA Tournament, end their campaign at 32-15.
To start off the game in the top of the first, Wesleyan took over the early 1-0 lead when junior Marco Baratta (Tenafly, N.J.) notched an RBI single to centerfield to bring in senior Donnie Cimino (Westwood, N.J.).
Facing a one-run deficit on the board, Southern Maine senior Andrew Richards (South Portland, Maine) kept his squad within striking distance as he held the Cardinals scoreless for five frames and he set down 15-of-18 batters before running into trouble in the top of the seventh.
With runners on first and second and one out, sophomore Nick Miceli (West Hartford, Conn.) laced a double down the left field line, scoring sophomore Will O’Sullivan (Needham, Mass.) put Wesleyan ahead 2-0.
The Cardinals tacked on two more runs by taking advantage of a pair of miscues. Schaefer crossed home on a misplayed ball by the first baseman and Miceli touched the plate on a dropped third out at second on a fielder’s choice.
Junior Nick DiBase (Portland, Maine) had a run producing at-bat in the bottom of the eighth to break up the shutout, but he grounded into a double play with the bases loaded and senior Sam Elias (Norwood, N.J.) got out of the jam on a ground out.
The Huskies made one last attempt at a rally in the last of the ninth as Elias plunked the lead-off batter and walked freshman Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine). Elias though dug deep and retired the next three batters to preserve the final score.
Rantz (5-2) scattered five hits and he recorded a pair of punch outs without walking a batter in the victory. Rantz was effective with 85 pitches (60 strikes).
Richards (11-5) permitted four runs (three earned) on 11 hits to go with 11 strikeouts (10 swinging) and one walk over nine frames of work on 126 pitches, 94 for strikes. It was his third complete game of the year.
Micelli and Baratta both had two base-knocks each to help pace an 11-hit attack while Southern Maine manufactured seven hits without a multi-hitter.

Ramapo Bests Curry, 12-4, To Advance To Winners Bracket Final Of New England Regional
May 14, 2015
Ramapo Postgame Interview | Curry Postgame Interview
HARWICH, Mass. – Freshman Connor Walsh (Waldwick, N.J.) went 3-for-5 with three trips to home plate and two RBI to help lift third-seeded Ramapo to a 12-4 triumph over seventh-seeded Curry in the fourth game of the second round of the 2015 NCAA Division III New England Baseball Regional this evening at Whitehouse Field.
Ramapo (30-14) moves on to the winners bracket final to take on fourth-seeded Salem State at 4:30 p.m. while Curry (24-14) takes on MIT tomorrow at 1:15 p.m.
The Roadrunners scored seven runs over the first three frames of play, pushing across five tallies in the top of the second, taking advantage of a pair of miscues by the Colonels.
Following an RBI single by Walsh, senior Brandon Berger (Belvidere, N.J.), junior Ryan Rinsky (North Caldwell, N.J.) and sophomore Robert DeAngelis (Staten Island, N.Y.) all scampered home on a throwing error by the pitcher off of an infield single.
Walsh and junior Rafael Dela Cruz (Elizabeth, N.J.) then scampered home for Ramapo in the top of the third for the commanding 7-0 edge.
Curry answered back in the bottom of the third as senior Derek Pizarro (Cambridge, MA) rapped out a single to help score freshman William De La Cruz (Bronx, N.Y.) before junior Kyle Connors (Stoughton, Mass.) touched the plate on a misplayed ball by the centerfielder to slice into the deficit.
The Roadrunners built up their margin to 9-2 on a RBI single by senior Scott Peschiani (Harriman, N.Y.) in the sixth and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Robert DeAngelis (Staten Island, N.Y) to help bring in Berger, who tripled in the very next stanza.
The Colonels strung together five base knocks in seven at-bats with run producing appearances by freshman Evan Morris (Pembroke, Mass.) and junior John Arens (Milton, Mass.) to narrow the gap to 9-4, but left a man at every base as senior Tom Portesy (Flanders, N.J.) got out of the jam with a strikeout.
Ramapo put the game away with three runs in the top of the eighth. Walsh and senior Rich Policastro (Lodi, N.J.) had consecutive RBI solo safeties down the right field line while Walsh notched his third tally of the game on an errant throw by the second baseman trying to double off a man at first.
Portesy (9-1) fanned nine over eight innings of work as he allowed four earned runs on eight hits with three walks.
Sophomore Brian Burke (Swampscott, Mass.) absorbed the loss and fell to 4-2 on the season. Burke surrendered eight runs (one earned) off nine hits to go with five strikeouts and three walks.
Dela Cruz was 3-for-5 with one run and an RBI while Berger finished with two base-knocks and scored a pair of runs. Morris and Pizarro both went 2-for-4 as De La Cruz had two of Curry’s four runs.

May 14, 2015
Salem State Postgame Interview | Southern Maine Postgame Interview
HARWICH, Mass. – Fourth-seeded Salem State University scored nine runs in the opening two innings on Thursday evening en-route to defeating top-seeded University of Southern Maine in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Division III New England Baseball Regional at Whitehouse Field.
With the win, the Vikings (27-13) will remain in the winner’s bracket and play tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. against the winner of tonight’s game between third-seeded Ramapo College and seventh-seeded Curry College. The Huskies (32-14) will take on Wesleyan in an elimination game tomorrow at 10 a.m.

Buckland’s Complete Game Leads Salem State Past MIT, 6-2
May 13, 2015
MIT Postgame Interview | Salem State Postgame Interview
HARWICH, Mass. – Junior Sean Buckland (Lynn, Mass.) tossed a complete-game two-hitter to lead Salem State University to a 6-2 victory over MIT in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Division III New England Baseball Regional on Wednesday at Whitehouse Field.
With the win, Salem State (26-13) will play in the winner’s bracket tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. while the Engineers (25-13) will play in an elimination game at 10 a.m. The victory for the Vikings is their first in the NCAA Division III Tournament since 2006 and second overall, when they dispatched Southern Maine, 8-5, in their Harwich Regional opener.
Buckland was masterful in securing his fourth win of the season, striking out eight and retiring 24 consecutive batters between the second and ninth innings. Offensively, the Vikings were led by sophomore Colton Fontaine (Newburyport, Mass.) and senior Ryan Beliveau (Lynn, Mass.), who combined to go 3-for-7 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI.
The Engineers started the game with momentum right away, as John Drago (Peoria, Ariz.) led off the inning with a walk. Freshman Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) continued with a double down the left field line off Buckland.
Drago scored the first run of the game on a sac fly by Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.). Senior Hayden Cornwell (Newport Beach, N.C.) then drove in Filiere with a ground ball through the right side of the infield.
It wasn’t until the bottom of the fourth inning that the Vikings were able to answer back. Dan Connors (Danvers, Mass.) started the inning with a walk, which was followed by a Fontaine hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Beliveau put the Vikings on the board with a base hit, scoring Connors from third. On the ensuing play, Fontaine scored on an error by Filiere, and a sac fly by Andrew Deloury (Andover, Mass.) capped the inning for another run for the Vikings.
In the bottom of the fifth, K.J. Parent (Knoxville, Tenn.) took over in relief for MIT and induced a ground ball with the bases loaded. Filiere tagged third base but overthrew the first baseman, allowing a run to score. A second error on the play resulted in another Salem State run and the Vikings would make it 6-2 on a Beliveau single.
MIT threatened in the top of the ninth as the first two batters reached base, but Buckland ended the game with a strikeout for his second consecutive complete game.
