Widener Shuts Out DeSales in Quarterfinals

CHESTER, Pa. - The Widener field hockey team scored two second-half goals for a 2-0 victory over third seed DeSales at Edith R. Dickson Field Wednesday evening in the ECAC Division III Field Hockey Championship Quarterfinals.
Senior Kayla Herr (Lancaster, Pa.) and freshman Jackie Daniels (Glen Mills, Pa.) tallied goals for the Pride, who outshot the Bulldogs 6-1 in the second half and 8-4 overall.
Herr scored on a penalty stroke - her second of the season - to put the Pride on the board in the 45th minute of play. The tally marked Herr's 14th of the year.
With less than five minutes remaining in the game, Daniels extended the Pride's lead to two, deflecting the ball off a DeSales defender for her fourth goal of the year.
Widener freshman goalkeeper Sabrina Roberto (Collegeville, Pa.) stopped two shots in the win t for her fifth shutout victory of the year. DeSales sophomore goalkeeper Katarina Polyviou (Cranford, N.J.) made three saves in the loss. The Bulldogs (12-9) held an 8-3 penalty corner advantage in the game.
The Pride will face FDU-Florham in the semifinals at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 at overall top seed Alvernia in Reading, Pa. The championship game is slated for a noon start on Sunday, Nov. 12 at Alvernia.
