Dartmouth Claims 2017 ECAC DI Women's Indoor Tennis Championship

BOSTON, Mass. -  The 2017 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division I Women’s Indoor Tennis Championship concluded at Harvard University on Sunday, February 12 with Dartmouth College being crowned champions and Brown University as runner up.

The day began with Cornell claiming a win over Princeton. The Tigers’ Caroline Joyce and Nicole Kalhorn along with Clare McKee and Gaby Pollner won their matches giving Princeton the point in doubles play.

Cornell’s strong singles play was the deciding factor as D’Ascenzo, Shah and Stewart captured victories in straight-sets. Marika Cusick rallied past Princeton’s Steffensen (7-5,3-6,1-6) to win the match for Cornell, 4-2.

In the day’s second match, Dartmouth shut out Columbia, 4-0 to claim the ECAC 2017 DI Women’s Indoor Tennis Championship. The Big Green’s dominant display started in doubles play with Kristina Mathis and Taylor Ng and the tandem of Julia Schroeder and Racquel Lyn posting wins by the scores of 6-3 and 6-2, respectively awarding Dartmouth the point.

The Big Green then received wins in singles play from Ng and Lyn, before Chuyang Guan clinched the match for Dartmouth with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Columbia’s Adi Milstein.

In the final match of the day, No. 5 Brown squared off against No. 6 Harvard and claimed a 4-1 win over the Crimson. The Bears captured the point in doubles play behind wins from Dayna Lord and Alyza Benotto (6-1), and Maddie Stearns and Mariska Chamdani (6-4) to take a 1-0 edge into the singles portion of the match.

Alyza Benotto posted a 6-3, 6-1 win in her match for the Bears, while Jack won her pairing over June Lee in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1). Cosme then notched a comeback win over Natasha Gonzalez (2-6, 6-3, 6-1) to seal the match for the Bears. Brown University finished the championship as runner up by virtue of the head-to-head tie breaker.
