NEWARK, NJ – The Drew University Rangers won the ECAC Men’s Soccer Championship tonight in convincing fashion over Rutgers-Newark, behind a hat trick by sophomore Nate Race (Bridgewater, NJ). Drew dominated the first half with five first half goals and is all the would need to put the game out of reach.
All of Drew’s goals came within a twenty-two-minute span of incredible activity in the middle of the first half. Race’s first goal came with an assist from Max Correa (Belleville, NJ) sixteen minutes into the game. Correa assisted again a minute later on a goal by Aidan Cserhat (Taos, NM). Shortly thereafter, Race found the net again to put the Rangers up by three, with an assist from Cserhat.
Race secured his hattrick just after the midpoint of the first half, when he connected during a scramble for ball bouncing in front of the net following a corner kick. Matt Asante added Drew’s fifth goal of the half at the thirty-eight-minute mark when he penetrated with the ball, created his own shot and delivered, giving Drew an insurmountable 5-0 lead.
Rutgers broke the shutout with a late goal when Adonis Scotland (Elizabeth, NJ) served up a cross from the left wing that teammate Ariel Parada (Jersey City, NJ) promptly headed in convincingly past the keeper.
With the win, Drew concludes the season at 15-6-1, and claims the ECAC DIII Men’s Soccer Championship. Rutgers Newark finishes the season at 12-9-1.
