Born in 1934 right before the start of World War 2, Royce Flippin enjoyed a lengthy career as an athletic administrator at Princeton University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Flippin, a Princeton graduate, played halfback for the Tigers where he captained the 1955 Ivy League championship football team his senior year under coach Charley Caldwell and received the John Prentiss Poe Memorial Cup, Princeton’s highest football award. In his junior season, Flippin finished 11th in total offense and 16th in rushing despite missing three games. For his abilities, he was named All-Ivy First Team and an All-East selection.

In 1956, Flippin was the 13th Tiger to get drafted to the NFL when the Washington Redskins took him in the 27th round.

After serving as an officer in the Marine Corps and a career in the business world, Flippin returned home to lead Princeton’s athletic department to unprecedented success during his time as athletic director.

In his six years, Princeton led the Ivy League in all-sport winning percentage and successfully integrated women’s athletics into the newly co-ed university. During his time, Flippin added recreation to departments masthead in recognition of the growing interest in lifetime sports, recreational activities and health and fitness by the student body, faculty and staff.

In 1980, Flippin was hired as athletic director at MIT where he served five years on the NCAA Executive Committee and one year as President of the ECAC. After 12 years as athletic director, Flippin moved to New York City to work in MIT’s Development office.
