Cabrini Wins 2019 ECAC Women's Lacrosse Title

MADISON, N.J.— Cabrini University broke a 5-5 halftime tie early in the second half by outscoring Drew 4-1 over a four minute span in the second period to seize the lead and win the contest as the Cavaliers defeated the Rangers 15-10 in the championship game of the 2019 ECAC women’s lacrosse championship at Shields Field on the campus of FDU Florham.
The championship was the first in program history for Cabrini, who earned its fourteenth win of the year and end its 2019 campaign with a 14-8 overall record. Drew’s season ends with a 16-5 overall record and runner ups in the 2019 ECAC championship.
Despite a halftime tie, Cabrini led most of the way in the first half. Drew scored the first goal of the game and led 1-0 9:27 into the contest. But the lead only lasted 16 seconds. Cabrini’s Dana Carlson scored the equalizer with 9:43 gone by to tie the score. The Cavaliers then scored three more to go ahead 4-1 with 13:47 to go in the first half.
Drew answered with the next three goals after that and tied the score at 4-4 with 8:29 to play. Both teams scored once more in the closing stages of the first half, and the game was tied 5-5 at halftime.
With the score tied 6-6 early in the second half, Cabrini netted three in a row to jump ahead 9-6 and the Cavaliers led the rest of the way. Drew pulled to within a goal on two occasions as the Rangers got to within a goal at 9-8 with 17:47 to go and 10-9 with 10:09 to go. But Cabrini outscored Drew 5-1 over the final 10 minutes to secure the win.
The Cavaliers were led by Avery Murphy with five goals, one assist and 11 draw controls. Teammate Ashley Tutzauer netted one goal, six assists and five ground balls. Taylor Dimmerling netted three goals and picked up five ground balls, while Shea Neary added three goals and three ground balls.
Drew was led by Hailey Simmons with three goals, one assists and four ground balls. Allie Didardo had two goals, one assist, six ground balls and five draw controls for Drew, while Mia Campanale added two goals and two ground balls for the Rangers.
Cabrini goalkeeper Sam Hamalak earned the win making 10 saves in the contest, while Drew net minder Kat Michalski stopped 10 shots in the game.
