ECAC Empowerment Series Panel on Student-Athlete Mental Health Issues
EMPOWERMENT SERIES PANEL ON STUDENT-ATHLETE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES
November 23, 2020, Danbury, CT—The ECAC and The Sports Business Institute are pleased to announce that the latest ECAC Empowerment Series panel discussion will take place on Wednesday, December 2 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. Eastern. This panel will address mental health issues facing student-athletes within intercollegiate athletics, with an emphasis on strategies to both prevent serious mental health issues from arising and caring for and treating students with challenging mental health issues.
We are thrilled to feature the panelists listed below, each of whom are on the front lines of addressing mental health issues involving intercollegiate athletics. To register to observe the virtual panel, please go to the following link to reserve your spot.

TOM GOLIGHTLY, Ph.D
Dr. Tom Golightly is currently an Assistant Director-Athletics for BYU Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). He graduated Summa cum Laude from the University of Arizona in the year 2000. He then completed his Ph.D. at BYU in Counseling Psychology in 2007. He completed his internship at Texas A&M University Student Counseling Service and worked for a time at Texas Tech University's Student Counseling Center as the liaison for the Department of Athletics. Tom returned to BYU in 2008, joining the clinical faculty at BYU. Since his initial appointment, Tom has served in various administrative positions. He was awarded the rank of Clinical Professor in 2018. He is currently the Assistant Director – Athletics managing the team of counselors providing mental health services to all student-athletes at BYU. Tom still serves as the team psychologist for baseball, football, men's and women's basketball, cross country/track and field, and women's soccer. He is also tasked with teaching responsibilities in two courses for the university – Performance Psychology and Contemporary Issues for Student-athletes. He is currently an Advisory Board Member for the Clinical/Counseling Sport Psychology Association or CCSPA (the largest international organization of sport psychologists working with elite-level student-athletes) and is a contributing member of an NCAA task force on mental health issues affecting student-athletes.
ADAM SUACEDO
Adam is a Mindset Coach, who is based in the Silicon Valley. Since earning his Master's Degree in Sport Psychology in 2010, he has provided both individual and team consulting to empower clients to realize their full performance potential. Whether working with CEOs or world champions, Adam draws from his experiences in sport, fitness, and business to create his framework for mindset development. In his private practice, he currently provides corporate health & wellness support to both national and global organizations, with a focus on personal and professional development. In addition, he continues to remotely support multiple athletic programs at his alma mater, Santa Clara University, as well as, at San Jose State University. His work in college athletics also extends to supporting individual D-1 student-athletes, in various sports, at universities all over the country. Lastly, Adam also partners with global fitness brand, NCFIT, and local elite youth sport academies to provide his mindset coaching and team development services.
IVY WATTS
Ivy Watts, a former Division II All-American track athlete, who appeared to have it all together struggled daily with her mental health, in silence. After finally seeking help, Ivy is now dedicated to promoting mental wellness and reducing mental health stigma by sharing her story through public speaking and her blog, Beautifully Simply You. Ivy, who is Certified in Mental Health First Aid and has her Master's in Public Health, empowers others to speak their truths, know that they are not alone, learn the beauty of self-love and find the strength to keep fighting for their tomorrows.
ERIC MARGENAU, Ph.D
Dr. Eric Margenau wears several hats. He is a clinical psychologist with a sports psychology practice. He served as Executive Director of the Center for Sports Psychology, where he consulted with several Major League Baseball teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees, and the New Jersey Nets of the NBA, helping players deal with psychological, emotional and performance issues. In addition, he has also hosted a weekly radio program on New York's WFAN, written a column for the NY Daily News entitled "Psyching It Out", and provided psychological analysis for "The NFL on NBC". He is Editor-in-Chief of the "Encyclopedic Handbook of Private Practice" and author of the book, "Sports Without Pressure", both available from Taylor and Francis, Boca Raton, FL. He has also owned and/or operated 19 franchises and founded United Sports Ventures.
DAN COONAN, Moderator
Dan Coonan has served as CEO of the ECAC since 2017. Prior to that he spent 11 years as Director of Athletics at Santa Clara University… He has also served as Executive Associate Athletics Director at Cal and Assistant Commissioner of the Pac-12 Conference. He has practiced law, ran a Congressional campaign, taught law as an Adjunct Professor at the University of San Francisco, oversaw all fundraising for the Catholic Church in Los Angeles, and served as Chairman of the Board of the largest homeless shelter network in the Bay Area. He is also an author – his novel of Presidential Spirits was released by Goose River Press in April.

The ECAC is an 82-year-old organization with over 200 member schools across all NCAA Divisions. The ECAC exists to enhance the experience of student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics and provides great value for universities and college by sponsoring championships, leagues, bowl games, tournaments, and other competitions throughout the Northeast.
