Brockport Wins Clayton Chapman Bowl over W&J

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The Brockport Golden Eagles football team downed the Washington & Jefferson Presidents 20-7 on Saturday, Nov. 20, in the 2021 Eastern College Athletic Conference Clayton Chapman Bowl at Bob Boozer Field.

The win marked Brockport's fifth straight postseason appearance. The Golden Eagles finished the year 8-3 overall (4-2 Empire 8), while the Presidents wrapped up at 8-3 overall (7-2 PAC).

Jack Cheshire's 25-yard touchdown pass to Jala Coad opened the scoring for the Golden Eagles. In the second quarter, Nate Wigent added a 22-yard field goal to give Brockport a 10-0 halftime lead.

Cheshire added a 30-yard pass to Imhotep Cromer midway through the third to extend the lead before the Presidents got on the board early in the fourth quarter.

William & Jefferson's Justin Heacock connected with Andrew Wolf for an 80-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 10 just 21 seconds into the final frame. Wigent added a 27-yard field goal to extend the Golden Eagles' lead to the final score of 20-7.

Ben Damiani led the Golden Eagles with seven total tackles, while Lawrence Jenkins and Hakeem Yaya had five each. Jenkins totaled two of Brockport's three sacks, and Yaya had an interception and three tackles for loss, and Josh Greenwood added two tackles for loss as Brockport posted nine tackles for loss against the Presidents.

Jenkins' play earned him Most Valuable Player honors.

William & Jefferson's Sean Doran led all defensive players with 21 tackles, including six solo tackles. Tyler Sabo added 13 tackles for the Presidents, who had seven solo tackles for loss and ten assisted tackles for loss. Each team posted five pass breakups on the day.

Brockport outrushed William & Jefferson 199-9, but the Presidents turned the tables in receiving yards, besting the Golden Eagles 249-98. Brockport dominated in time of possession, holding the ball for 40 minutes, 37 seconds.

Brockport's Coad led all rushers with 212 yards on the day, while Cheshire had two touchdowns while going 5-for-15 with 98 yards. 

Heacock's only throw of the day for William & Jefferson resulted in the Wolf touchdown. Colton Jones went 25-for-43 for 169 yards. Wolf led all receivers with 147 yards on the afternoon, catching eight receptions.
