Harvard Claims ECAC Men’s Indoor Tennis Championship Title

ITHACA, N.Y. – Harvard defeated Columbia in the ECAC Men’s Tennis Indoor Championship match to claim this season’s most coveted prize. The Crimson defeated the Lions 4-2 and lifted this season’s championship trophy.
After picking up the first point in doubles play, Columbia started the match with a 1-0 lead.
Harvard took an early advantage in doubles play by winning the first match at No. 3 doubles. Henry von der Schulenburg and Steven Sun defeated Austen Huang and Alex Kotzen 6-3.
Columbia came back in doubles play and won at the No. 2 and No. 1 spots to get the point. Henry Ruger and Jayden Templeman beat Harris Walker and Ronan Jachuck 6-3 at No. 2, and then at the No. 1 spot, Max Westphal and Theo Winegar defeated Daniel Milavsky and Brian Shi 7-5.
In singles play, Harvard tied the contest at 1-1 with a win at No. 2, with Walker beating Hugo Hashimoto 6-1 and 6-3.
The Lions responded with their only win of singles play at No. 6, with Roko Horvat defeating Sun 6-2 and 7-5.
The Crimson won the next three matches to seal the win and the championship.
At No. 5 singles, Milavsky defeated Ruger 6-1, 3-6, and 6-4, followed by Shi beating Westphal 7-6 and 7-6 at the No. 3 singles.
The deciding match was at No. 4 singles with Jachuck beating Huang 5-7, 6-3, and 6-4.
In today’s 3rd/4th place match, No. 4 Princeton defeated No. 3 Cornell 4-2 to finish the tournament as the third-place team.
Princeton won the early point with a pair of wins a the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in doubles play.
It looked like Cornell was in the driver's seat after getting the first win of doubles play at the No. 1 spot. Alafia Ayeni and Vladislav Melnic defeated Ryan Seggerman and Justin Barki 6-2 to begin the match.
The Tigers won the next two matches to claim the point. Karl Poling and Damian Rodriguez defeated Pietro Rimondini and Jack McCarthy 6-2 at the No. 2 doubles, and then Thomas Bosancic and Filippos Astreinidis defeated Adit Sinha and Nathan Mao 6-3.
Princeton took three of the matches to seal the victory in singles play.
Cornell tied the contest at 1-1 with the first win at singles play at No. 3. Radu Papoe defeated Rodriguez 6-4, and 6-1.
Princeton retook the lead at 2-1 with a win at No. 6 singles, with Astreinidis beating Samuel Paquette 6-4 and 6-2.
Cornell responded with their second victory in singles play at No. 2 to tie the contest again, this time at 2-2. Melnic defeated Poling 6-1 and 7-6.
Princeton then took the next two singles matches at No. 5 and No. 1 to seal its third-place finish.
At No. 5, Will peters defeated McCarthy 7-5 and 6-3, and then Seggerman beat Ayeni 3-6, 7-6, and 6-4 at No. 1 singles.
The 5th/6th place match was contested between Yale and Penn, with the Quakers coming out on top of the 4-1 victory.
Penn earned the point in doubles play with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.
In the first doubles match, Edoardo Graziani and Jason Hildebrandt defeated Michael Sun and Cody Lin 6-4. The No. 2 doubles match went to Penn with Kevin Zhu and Harsh Parikh beating Theo Dean and Aidan Reilly 7-6.
In singles play, Penn won the first match at No. 1, with Graziani defeating Sun 6-2 and 6-2, which gave the Quakers a 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs won match No. 5 as Shervin Dehmaubed defeated Zach Smith 6-1 and 6-2, making the contest 2-1.
Penn won the next two singles matches at No. 4 and No. 3.
Parikh defeated Reilly 6-3 and 6-3 at the No. 4 spot, and Aditya Gupta defeated Lin at No. 3, 6-2, and 7-6.
In the 7th and 8th place match to start the day, Dartmouth defeated Brown 4-2. Dartmouth finished the tournament in seventh place with the victory, and Brown finished in eighth.
This match was played singles first, with Dartmouth winning four matches to secure the victory.
The No. 6 spot was the first to finish, and it fell in favor of Dartmouth as Daniel Webb defeated Brian Chong 6-0 and 6-1 to give the Big Green a 1-0 advantage.
Dartmouth won at No. 5 singles to go up 2-0, with Andy Ilie defeating Chun Lam 6-3 and 6-2.
The No. 1 singles went to the Big Green with Carlos Guerrero beating Ching Lam 6-2 and 6-1. Dartmouth jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead.
No. 4 and No. 3 singles were the next two matches decided, and they fell in favor of Brown, who cut the lead to 3-2.
Matthew Mu defeated Pierce Widdecombe in two sets with a score of 7-5 and 6-3 at the No. 4 spot. Roger Chou defeated Dominik Pauli at the No. 3 singles spot 1-6, 6-4, and 6-3.
The No. 2 singles match decided the winner as Dartmouth’s Anders Gibbons beat Niraj Komatineni 7-5, 4-6, and 6-2.
