Columbia outlasts Harvard in rematch to win 2022 ECAC indoor crown
HANOVER, N.H. – The finals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Indoor Tennis Championships took place on Sunday evening on the campus of Dartmouth College, with Columbia collecting the 2022 title over Harvard in a rematch from last winter. Four of the six singles matches went to three sets before the Lions ultimately held on for the 4-3 win in dramatic fashion.
Princeton defeated Yale officially 4-1 in the first match of the day, but after coaches agreed to play out the duration of singles, the Tigers added two more points to close out their weekend. Princeton controlled the doubles point, while Fnu Nidunjianzan, Sebastian Sec and Thomas Bosancic each came away victorious in single action.
In the seventh-place match, Dartmouth outdueled Brown by a final of 4-3, with the sixth singles flight deciding the outcome. The Big Green earned the first three points of the day before seeing the Bears rattle off three straight points of their own, and Logan Chang won a thrilling three-setter to decide the clinching point.
In the first upset of the weekend, 4-seed Cornell edged 3-seed Penn 4-3 to close out the championship weekend in third place. The two teams exchanged the first six points of the match before Vladislav Melnic came back from a set down to give Big Red one of the most exciting wins of the indoor season.
The championship round saw the Lions pick up the first two points of the day, but Harvard answered with three of the next four points. All eyes turned to the top singles flight, where Columbia’s Michael Zheng defeated Harvard’s Harris Walker in a back-and-forth three-setter that produced a final score of 7-6, 3-6, 6-2.
