Monmouth, Iona grab early lead on Day One

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The 2024 ECAC Winter Championship got underway on Friday, with the Monmouth women and the women of Iona leading the way after the first day of competition. The event is hosted by Baruch College and will run through Sunday.
 
The Hawk women racked up 437 points on Friday, 12 points ahead of Siena and 23 points ahead of Stony Brook. On the men’s side, the Gaels turned in a strong opening day, jumping out to a big lead with 644 points as a team.
 
Stony Brook was well represented in the women’s one-meter dive, with Sara DiStefano (247.30), Natalia Chronomidza (231.00) and Mykayla Lavery (225.10) snagging the top three individual spots. Iona junior Dylan Ricco (240.00) and teammate Joel Picard (207.70) took the top two places on the men’s side, with Adel freshman Tyler Romero (179.10) taking third.
 
The Monmouth team of Jenna Pryne, Katie Ryan, Jensen Ritter and Edie Ancell took first in the women’s 200 free relay, doing so with a time of 1:35.40. The Long Island men followed with a win, as Fabrizio Infante, Emilio Garcia, Marcelo Chauvet and Alejandro Pascual Del Sid (1:21.31) were able to snag the event crown.

In the women’s 500 free, Ritter picked her first individual win of the weekend, as her time of 4:58.72 was just enough to hold off Stony Brook’s Franny Baber (4:59.16). Iona’s Michael Faughnan broke his own meet record with a new mark of 4:21.29, followed by LIU freshman Finn Drysdale (4:25.46).
 
Allie Bashor (2:05.61)and Lara Wielkiewicz (2:06.57) gave LIU a 1-2 finish in the women’s 200 IM, while SBU sophomore Alli Talcott (2:07.24) rounded out the top three. Two Iona men followed with a similar finish, as Noah Giunta (1:50.96) and Brian Baldwin (1:52.32) finished atop the podium.
 
Ancel (23.95) took home the conference crown in the women’s 50 free, holding of LIU’s Gabriela Lima (23.96) by the slimmest of margins to complete the photo finish. Pascual Del Cid (20.19) grabbed the men’s title in another tight race, as Iona teammates Kieran Egan (20.31) and Nick Patino (20.34), Monmouth’s Owen Dyson (20.39) and Garcia (20.59) all finished less than half a second behind.
 
Monmouth’s women (3.48.74) closed out the day with a win in the 400 medley relay, while the Iona group of Faughnan, Matthew Loftus, Baldwin and Egan (3:16.05) closed out the day with another meet record in the same event.
